Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not only is this offensive and condescending to women, but offensive and discriminatory against men. I spoke to someone who said he was in charge at the shop and was basically laughed at.

Please can every man who reads this ring them and apply for the job? There's also solicitors a few doors up who will help you sue them.

In all seriousness though, this and the leering and catcalling on the Harringay part of Green Lanes must make it the most sexist street in Britain. It's 2015, about time this was stamped out for good.

Do you have a daughter? If not, maybe a sister, or a niece? female friends? wife? girlfriend? mother? If you do and you "understand the points raised" then you would find it offensive - no?

Doubt any family of mine would want to work in one of those places.

I also believe there's an element of women will be less trouble/won't challenge unreasonable requests or unsafe working practices. That they will be told what to do and will do it.

Then let's forget equality. Surely employers should be open to all gender/sexual orientations and base their recruitment on skills and experience. We will go back to the dark ages without laws. Women would be laughed, leered at and driven back indoors.

Yes I wasn't saying I believe it is justified, I said I believe that's what the sexists who post such signs think.

I know Lauren. I'm in agreement with you. My reply was to another post in this thread on previous page….

Ahhhh it gets confusing with the way threads are laid out on here☺️

Was thinking just now, maybe we could start a group? Where we can discuss things like this in person over a glass of wine or beer in the Salisbury rather than on here, where it is usually met with men telling us to lighten up or that it's not a problem in their opinion.

I would really like to get something going to challenge this problem in our neighbourhood.

It does get confusing… hard to follow sometime.

Good idea to do something. We could draft a letter which via the Harringay Traders assn. could be distributed to all restaurants, shops etc. Just something short, a 'gentle' reminder about compliane with equality laws and employment And this should also be sent to local MPs,councillors etc.

The traders association responded when I tweeted them about this. Said they would have a word. Not sure if they will take it seriously as they seem to turn a blind eye to these signs and the degradation of women on a daily basis in their cafes and shops, but we will see. I would certainly like to pursue my point about the cramped, unsafe window pens with them and see if we can get them to improve the working conditions and health and safety of those poor women. I want to know why it's just older women doing it and why they have to sit in the floor or on makeshift stools in the windows with no legroom and no space between them and the stove, where they can't move around freely. Why aren't they allowed to serve on the counter or in the restaurant? Why don't the men do the pastry rolling in awful conditions and let the women serve the business? It's awful that this is one of the first things visitors see when they come here. Why is it allowed? Why hasn't anyone stopped it? Why are people still supporting these businesses? If we discovered animals were being kept like this we would rightly be outraged, yet we all walk past these places every day and don't see it, or don't want to see it for what it is.

Lauren, as far as I'm aware it's Rob Chau who looks after the twitter feed. Rob owns Tao Sports at 523 Green Lanes. Pop in and talk to him if you have time. He's very approachable. He may have some ideas about how these issues can be dealt with.

Thanks Matt.

Glad to see someone else has returned to the plight of the gozleme rolling women in the windows. My earlier reference to them yesterday may be a clue to reading my contribution to this discussion. (@lauren, abi, ruth)
