Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not only is this offensive and condescending to women, but offensive and discriminatory against men. I spoke to someone who said he was in charge at the shop and was basically laughed at.

Please can every man who reads this ring them and apply for the job? There's also solicitors a few doors up who will help you sue them.

In all seriousness though, this and the leering and catcalling on the Harringay part of Green Lanes must make it the most sexist street in Britain. It's 2015, about time this was stamped out for good.

Can we get a ban on phlegming and spitting in the street as well? Something else that seems to be done mainly by blokes.

Something that I also challenge when I see it and is usually met with misogynistic abuse. I have no idea why people (some men) do this. I have never in my life felt compelled to clear my throat and project sputum and mucus across the pavement as I go about my day. Its filthy disgusting and people who do it are filthy disgusting.

Other boroughs enforce this too - particularly in areas with a high incidence of TB, like Newham.

I usually give a dirty look, which often brings an apology - but why do it in the first place?

Lauren, you light the blue touch paper and then withdraw smartly when the sparks start to fly. Are you serious? Others rush in to hurl Greek insults such as 'misogynist'  at Turkish ads and Kurdish late night leering, or 'xenophobic' at those who might question their right to advertise or leer as they see fit. I trust Osbawn is not seeking to start our own homegrown silly squabble by referring the case to our splendidly multi-ethnic councillorate.

In Lauren's absence this 'discussion' has developed a crazy life of its own. Its highpoint, perhaps, Sarah's yearning for a Michael Fassbender where neither Irish dogs nor German shepherds are allowed - that or Rosyrose's dong waving Gardens interlude. CrouchHall made a valiant effort to return to the heart of Lauren's OP, sandwich making, but was soon forced to crouch and agree that maybe he was attempting a joke but had forgotten to raise Sarah's wished for "satire mark" or red flag. So much for free speech or even liberty to think about the fine art of sandwich making in today's Harringay.

Let me state clearly my predilection for elegantly served sandwiches, filled and sliced by experienced and capable women. I am fed up to the ears and eyeballs by the sight and orgasmic oohing-and-aahing of designer generated excuses for men, pretentious about their food and their pornobromic cuisine as they swarm across our screens, morning, noon and evening. We don't need such specimens applying for sandwich bar positions on Green Lanes.  Are there no streets to sweep, fields to plough, or bins to empty?  Leave the sandwich making and serving - like the gozleme kneading, rolling and fenestral display - to the experts, women.

And to return to Lauren's final plea above, she is right, of course. This is 2015, not 1965.  In all seriousness, this outré passé uber feminist pastiche is making this site a parody of itself. If all this catcalling and caterwauling is not already illegal, it damn well should be. It's 2015 after all, about time this sort of thing was stamped out for good.

Disclaimer: I am not, nor have I ever been, connected in any way with the above-mentioned Old Ale Emporium.

And perhaps leave the low paid jobs to women as well, eh, OAE?

Put us in the windows, display us, tell us what were are good at, not good at, pay us less, leer and lech, it's all fine. No problem. Just call it a 'silly squabble'. We should be happy.

Thanks for letting us know what you think and your summary of the thread. Enjoy your next sarnie.

To quote our fellow local neighbour/author/journalist/charity fundraiser Caitlin Moran...."You can tell whether some misogynistic societal pressure is being exerted on women by calmly enquiring, ‘And are the men doing this, as well?’ If they aren’t, chances are you’re dealing with what we strident feminists refer to as ‘some total ******* ********". In the context of the male-dominated premises where the adverts have been placed, it would seem that men 'aren't' waitressing/waitering.

My husband makes better sandwiches than me & he's even does it without any orgasmic oooohhhing & aaahhhiinnggg.

Good, Abi. He's obviously a real man and should apply for that Sandwich Bar post. We need more like him.

OAE, this really isn't "outré passé uber feminist pastiche ", these are my genuine feelings, as a woman/feminist. As Ruth says, it's about being leered at, paid less, told what you can/can't do, aspirations.

I'm really pleased this discussion has been raised on here, it needs addressing.

Find it hard to believe that your husband could be the king of sandwiches when i look at the actual king every morning in the mirror... sorry.

I didn't withdraw smarty I've just been busy at work and with life! We don't all get time to be here all the time.

Welcome back Lauren. The discussion went somewhat awry without you.

Lol.

I think its good because whats the point of advertising the job to everyone to be "fair" when its already decided that the employer wants a female member of staff?

It saves the men wasting there time.

I don't find it offensive but I understand the points you've raised
