Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is my first post to this forum but thought it might be a good place to ask for advice.  My parents visited me and generously picked up the bill at a two local restaurants on Green Lanes this past weekend, making just two payments on their card during this time.

They got a call from their bank Monday morning to ask about irregular payments on their bank card... they confirmed the restaurant bills, but there were also additional charges... small amounts, 30 and 15 pounds, one an online payments, one to a DIY store in London.  They had not made these were purchases.  The bank cancelled the card and refunded the payments they didn't make.

My parents believe their card details were taken at one of the two restaurants we visited.  I was angry and thought I should tell the two restaurants what had occurred, in case they had a staff problem, however I realise that theoretically their details could have been taken anywhere.  Should I inform them?   This has made me more cautious about paying by card and is a good reminder to keep the card in sight at all times.

If the dodgy payments were made AFTER your visit to the restaurants you would be doing them a favour by having a word. I would suggest you make sure you speak to the manager, since you don't want to tip off any of the staff who might be involved.

Card payments at restaurants which have mobile hand-held terminals where the card doesn't leave your hand should be safe. Unless anyone knows different..... ?

I would tell them. If a second person also has a problem then you have a clear signal that there is an issue, and they can start working out who is the culprit...

Were they both online payments ie card-not-present fraud?  Did they withdraw any cash while they were here?  I am very wary of using non-bank ATMs after my card was skimmed when I used a service station ATM.
