Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Bad experience at local Green Lanes hairdresser's. Was this really 'normal'?
I have just had highlights at a local hairdresser's. I have had good hair cuts there for 10 years or so & have had highlights there & at other hairdresser's. At one point today I finished up with a stinging scalp. This has never occurred before & was an experience I don't want to repeat. I was told it was 'normal'
The stinging came after 'tonic' was put on my head after the foils had been removed. I asked what it was as I didn't remember it having been used previously. I was told it would help blend the colours. I was alarmed & asked for it to be washed off. Later I was told it was a 'strong chemical - peroxide' ..
My skin is quite sensitive but I have never experienced such stinging before. Was it indeed 'normal' to use it without any warning or explanation?

The only time I've had my head sting like that when I'm at the hairdresser was when I washed my hair before going...the hairdresser explained that washing my hair had removed the natural scalp oils that would have protected my scalp from the dye. Ever since then I've never washed it the day of getting it dyed and ive never experienced the same problem again.
Maybe if you happened to wash your hair that day it could be the cause, if not then I don't know...

The problem to me seems to be that you were told two different things, so it's hard to attribute the sensation to anything specific. If it was indeed a tonic you would expect some degree of stinging because it acts much like toner on the face - kind of cold and astringent. however if it was peroxide, it shouldn't be being applied so close to the scalp as to cause stinging.

Safest to assume that your hairdresser screwed up.
There is more pseudoscience relating to haircare than most other subjects. Ask a hairdresser some questions about what hair is and how it grows and you'll find that their 'education' is riddled with waffle and unscientific weirdness.

I had a similar experience several years ago. I specifically said no bleach but the man working was Turkish and didn't understand. My scalp was also painful.
I complained to the other staff and I was offered a free oil head treatment, which I took.
I remained angry and have not return. The irony was that I got a lot of compliments on the colour!!!

Don't go there again.
They should be honest about what they are doing- 'tonic' or peroxide?
I had a bad experience at one Green Lanes hairdresser, after going there for a while, and stopped going. I didn't want my hair to start falling out!
Used another nearby for many years after but stopped going there now as they kept booking in other people for when I had an appointment and kept me waiting for ages on several occasions. When I complained the last time this happened (I had already gone away for half an hour and come back so was well past my original appt), the manager (I'm tempted to name and shame but won't) actually shouted at me, saying who did I think I was, I had just walked in off the street blah blah. I had an appointment which seemed to mean nothing and I had been using the place for years. Needless to say I don't go there now either! Found a much nicer place now very local where customer service and loyalty mean something. It's lovely.

Do tell who is one you go to now - local recommendations are always welcome. I had a bad experience at one in G Lanes , been going to for years, a few months ago. My usual hair cutter was away so I got hair cut somewhere else. Got shouted at by owner/manager when I went back, and he said (loudly and rudely) 'who cut your hair, a butcher?' (it was actually a v good cutter in M Hill). I didn't want to return there but my usual cutter came back and is v good.

I go to Mel at Vintage Hair which is right by Harringay Station (on other side of bridge). Mel is lovely and it's a small place so not noisy and full of people coming in and out for sun beds etc. I wouldn't go anywhere else now.

I have highlights and my hair was practically destroyed by hairdressers in London who all love their bleach. I now go to a Danish hairdresser in Crouch End who is used to the fine Scandinavian hair I have and I no longer have problems with split ends and dry frizzy hair. The stinging you mention sounds awful and that should never happen I am sure.

thanks Ruth for top tip, will try them out, been using sesema since it opened and often get a good cut although they often dont speak english, but always a different person there- they never stay so can be a bit hit and miss

I also go to Mel at Vintage Hair - she's brilliant - discovered her over a year or 2 ago - and such a genuine friendly person as well. It's also a lovely little salon so feels really private.
