Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Please back the Leukaemia Cancer Society's awareness campaign. We are asking that individuals across Haringey unite to try and encourage as many people as possible to join the stem cell register.

Joining the register is something we should all consider.  The cost to the donor is time and compassion. The value of the donation to families affected is immeasurable.

Every year over 7,000 people in the UK have their lives shattered by devastating news that they require a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Leukaemia and other potentially fatal bone marrow disorders strike indiscriminately and have a profound effect on all concerned. For many patients without a sibling match, volunteer donors offer the only alternative, the only chance of life.

Please share this and help us create awareness.

Our donor recruitment efforts focus on increasing the diversity of tissue types available and registering donors who are committed to helping any patient in need. We hold a recruitment event at the GCWO (Greek Cypriot Women’s Organisation) in Denmark Road N8, on the first Wednesday of each month from 5-7pm. Please visit us for more information.

s anyone able to donate or are there limiting factors such as age or health ?

Hello Maggie, thank you for joining this discussion. The Criteria  given by Melinda is correct and the most current.  If would like to add that joining the register is very easy and only takes 20min of your time. If you are not eligible please do encourage others. Leukaemia is the biggest child killer in the UK,  many of these children are losing their battle to this disease simply because a matching donor is not available.

Thank you both for replying however I am well past the age limit; I hope others may consider becoming a donor and giving leukaemia sufferers the chance of life.

I've offered to join several times and been discouraged by NHS staff, which seems rather strange to me. I'm perhaps not from a group they particularly want to encourage, as I'm white and they perhaps are looking more for minorities? I'd be willing to sign up but got the impression I wasn't really needed.

I would have thought that they needed as many bone marrow/stem cell donors as possible. The implications of this are disturbing.

Hello John, you are absolutely right! The more donors on the register, the more chances a patient has of finding a matching donor. The Leukaemia Cancer Society is here to advice and encourage people to join the register. We aim to make the procedure as simply as possible. We will be at the GCWO, in Denmark Road N8,on the 9th Sept fro 5 to 7pm and from October on the 1st Wednesday of each month, recruiting and giving advice and information. Everyone that falls within the right age group and is in good health is encouraged to join.

Thanks Androulla. Sadly, I am well past the sell-by date, otherwise I would be happy to volunteer.

Thanks John, but do please on the message.
Hello Sophie, thank you for sharing your experience. Nobody that falls within the right age group and is of good health should be discouraged from registering. Yes, the need for donors from ethnic origin is important because certain ethnic groups are greatly underrepresented on the register and patients are dying as a result, BUT anyone Could be a potential lifesaver! The match that someone is desperately waiting for! We will be at the GCWO on the 9th Sept and would be happy to meet with you. Pease let me know if this is convenient.

Hi Androulla - I'll see if I can come along to that, thanks

Look forward to meeting you. Please also encourage others, we need to create awareness.
