Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My wife and I live near to the Salisbury public house, in Woodlands Park Road. We have unfortunately accumulated a lot of household and other items which are badly cluttering up the house. This has been made worse as my wife's mother died a while ago, and we still have some stuff of hers which we are bringing out of storage and need to sell. A lot of the stuff we need to get rid of is in good or even "as new" condition, though a lot of it has had some wear also. Neither my wife nor I are in perfect health at the moment, and would welcome any advice or assistance as to how we might dispose of stuff and sort it, preferably selling locally to people at a low price.

If there is anyone on HOL who could help in any way, I would happily pay for some assistance, or split any profits from selling. I feel overwhelmed at present by the amount of clearing we need to do. Please note I'm not asking for "free labour", I'd be happy to pay a fair hourly rate for any help.

Amongst the things we need to dispose of are a number of table lamps, some Crestworth/Mathmos lava lamps in good condition, a number of mugs and cups (including some stuff that people collect, lime Bayley's Irish Cream "winking" mugs).

I realise this a very general plea for help, and most people may be put off by the rather open nature of the request. However, if you have any spare time, especially if you want to earn a fair hourly amount for helping, or you already buy/sell locally, please message me or give me a call on my mobile phone, 07762177630. Any offers of help or advice would be most gratefully received.

With fingers crossed, and thanking all members of HOL in anticipations, best wishes - Chris

Don't want to depress you, but having cleared out two houses recently, it's become almost impossible to sell secondhand furniture for a price that makes it worthwhile. There is too much cheap throwaway stuff available now.  There are some good ways to give it away, the best local one is probably ReStore in Tottenham, who repair and restore furniture and sell it very cheaply to those in need.

For the collectables, have a look on ebay at their Finished Listings sections - this gives an idea of what things really sell for, not the asking price.  This may help in deciding whether to go through the hassle of selling and possibly having to parcel up and post, vs straight to a charity shop.

If you can avoid the house clearance people, do so - in our experience they charge a lot and then trash stuff, they don't re-sell it.

I hope you can find someone/s to help out, I'm up to here with my own decluttering at the mo, same as every over-60 on the planet.

What about Jumble Trail on 26/7? You set up a stall outside your house. It's £5 to take part. I think there's already a discussion about it on here.

Dear Nick - Thank you for your offer of help and advice. I am really, really grateful for that and for the other messages HOL people have posted. Your advice about "one step at a time" is excellent, and it's what I've been told before. I will get back to you regarding you coming over early next week for a look and any further help.

I am really, really heartened by the offers from HOL people. It makes me feel much less "on my own" with all this.

Thank you, Nick, and thank you everyone else who has replied to my message.

I've also sent you a private message as my partner has some time to spare to give you a hand.

Hi Chris,

I have given a lot of furniture and other household items to Shelter Wood Green.  They will send someone around with a van to collect it.

If you don't manage to sell everything, it might be worth giving one or both of these guys a bell as well:

Both collect and though Restore claim to be furniture based, I've been to their site and they have quite a lot of crockery and other household items in there. I'm sure they could advise over the phone. I don't think there's a Reuse in Haringey, but there is in Islington, which might serve.

Good luck!
