Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Like a kid drawing up a present list for Father Christmas, I've been doing some early musing with Annie over in Pensioner Hoodies about a project to get MTD money for Harringay that I call 'The Memory bench- sit down and tell us your story'
The bench could live at the community garden , but perhaps it could be a movable bench which is just wheeled around and placed on street corners, in parks, outside community centres and people are invited to tell us their stories and show us their pictures (we could record some if people agreed and take photos). Its so simple it could work...

What do you think and have you got any ideas for nabbing some of that cash for your neighbourhood?

btw I know some people don't like the MTD thing but as its there might as well have a go, after all it paid for the mural at South Harringay I&N school for example.

I like the memory bench idea. Annie seems to be a good creator/co-creator of ideas. Let's bottle her.
In the nicest possible way Hugh I think Liz is the one we need to bottle! The Memory Bench was a musing Liz suggested after your pensioner hoodie post, but I really do think she's on to something here. What a great way to inspire people by offering a place where memories and stories can be shared in a positive, community spirited way. I'm sure people will have their views about it encouraging youths to hang around, but in my opinion the idea would be about bringing "everyone" together to share their thoughts and to be all-inclusive as opposed to exclusive.

I'll have a look at the link Liz, but also do a few searches and see if there's any funding available out there for community driven initiatives like this one.

I'll let you all know how we get on!
I've just spoken to Sharon Annafi who co-ordinates the council's "Making the Difference" programme. She said the Memory Bench idea would be exactly what they would consider for funding - Hurrah!

Applications open first week of Jan 09. She suggested completing the form on their site and emailing it directly to her at the start of next year and local ward councillors will assess the app from there. Sounds positive?

Brilliant, thanks for getting the info. I wonder if any local community groups would be interested as well, maybe GRA?
Maybe worth having a chat to Andy. Could we maybe invite him to the next HoL Navs meeting to have a chat about it? I'll carry on looking to see if I can source any other associations which could provide funding for this.
NOOOOOOO He can become a member first. All members are invited. I am not having one of my valuable "all night passes" being wasted listening to someone tell me off.
He is a member of the site, John. And this project is about encouraging the sharing of diverse histories, what's there to tell us off about?
I have to agree with Liz on this John. The Memory Bench idea is all about including "everyone" in the area - whether they're a member or not, they would be welcome to use the bench, share stories, photos and have a general chin-wag to pass the time with one another.

Andy would be invited as I believe he has a lot of knowledge on how best to get local initiatives like this up and running, and most importantly, who is best to approach to extract some community money from!
