Sorry to bore you all, but I'm wava over the moon. I've fixed my putah. Having been told by various experts that I'd have to clean install over my old installation - wiping the lot - or restore with my Acronis back-up, I thought I'd try just one more thing and run Spybot - seems that some virus had added a simple line to my registry which somehow shielded half of windows from being found.
So, not far off 18 hours of my life later, It's back. (Howcome no expert advised me to do what I did - though it was a phone call with Alan Stanton's brother that tipped me the wink tothe possibility. So Alan, please pass on my thanks to Mick)

No such thing as a 'computer expert' just a load of blokes scratching chins and taking educated guesses, like garage mechanics...still thank the lord that you are back in cyberspace and not releasing mournful tweets into the twitterverse.
