Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A website set up by the New Econmoics Foundation shows that the votes of people voting in Harringay are in the bottom 5% of votes in terms of counting towards the result of the general election

The website lets voters check to what extent their vote matters in the context of Britain's first past the post system.

NEF say;

In the 2010 election, more than half of all voters voted against their winning MP.

Their votes simply didn't count.

In the UK, the only voters with any real power to choose the government are those who live in marginal constituencies.

Indeed, voters in the most powerful 10% of constituencies will wield more than 30 times as much power as the least influential.

The rest of us have little or no power to influence the outcome of the election.

In fact, statistical analysis by the NEF (the new economics foundation) shows that one person in the UK does not have one vote... ...it's more like 0.30 votes.

In some ultra safe constituencies the value of your vote falls to practically zero. Find out how powerful your vote is in this general election.

Yes.... that's what I pointed out in 2011

"It's not the voting that's democracy, it's the counting"

Depressing stuff.

67% of the votes cast in the 2011 referendum ( a single yes/no issue ) were against AV.

You may not like the result but that's democracy.

True John but AV is complete pants and proper PR would give a much more representative system.

I suspect most were not well informed.

Most believed that in PR the link to who becomes the constituency MP would be lost. That must not be the case. In my 'home' system, we have two votes at General elections. We are now one of the most stable democracies in the world. More democratic than the U.K. even and have become the most respected country in the world. We are also running a no deficit economy. Not bad going for a once pariah.

Two vote system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_system_of_Germany#Voting_system

I am personally fond of the Irish system where 3/4 seat constituencies mean smaller parties have a real chance of representation. It also means you can effectively vote AGAINST parties you least like. In recent years thus has allowed the people to destroy the major party and has meant even a far left party has several seats

and when the MP will always vote the party line.

The 'whip' system should be scrapped, as well.

Thanks for the info, it really does feel like this, not that it stops me voting, just need to find a way to make Labour more accountable if  they do get in again

Oh what tosh, join the Labour Party, attend selection meetings, feel the power. Only £3.88 a month. (£1.96 if you're "unwaged" but I don't think they represent you anymore).

Fair point, I should at least attend the next meeting to see what goes on.  Having lived here 9 years it amazes me that not one party has ever knocked on my door canvassing for votes,

The Labour knockers are all in Hornsey+ Wood Green doing their best to oust Ms Featherstone.  Catherine West is a very strong candidate, this will be a close contest. No point knocking for Lammy.

If they cannot be bothered to canvass , then WHY should we get off our fat bums and go and vote ?

My vote won't change anything in this parliamentary constituency but I still want it recorded as +1 in the turnout - plenty of 'turnout down, people don't care about democracy' comment over the last few decades.
