Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last night at the Area Assembly we heard a presentation about the Community Justice court in Haringey.
Haringey Community Justice Court began hearing cases in January 2008.

It deals with a wide range of offences committed in
local areas. These include drugs and alcohol-related
offences, theft, threatening behaviour, criminal
damage, breach of ASBOs and harassment in N15, N17 and N4. It also hears cases relating to prostitution, kerb-crawling, and knife crimes committed anywhere in the borough.
Headed by a Magistrate, the court hears adult cases on Tuesdays at Tottenham Magistrates' Court and youth cases on Thursdays at
Haringey Magistrates' Court.
Offenders are often required to do uppaid work in the areas in which they have offended which can be suggested by residents. We were also invited to visit the Adult court to find out more.

If you would like to submit suggestions for Unpaid Work, or find out more about Community Justice in Haringey and how to get involved, email at gl-haringeymccjc@hmcourts-service.gsi.gov.uk

Liz, N8 was not mentioned, was that intentional?
Yes, they didn't mention N8 in the blurb.
I'm trying to get more info from them because I stupidly failed to pick up their handout. I imagine that when they say N4 they are thinking more Finsbury Park area but, as it says above, they deal with some kinds of crime no matter where it is in the Borough and they are looking for people to train as magistrates...interested?
With regards to unpaid work, I can think of a lot of thoroughly unpleasant and unrewarding tasks that could be dished out; cleaning up litter, dog dirt, graffiti etc.
But what about some positive, constructive work that might (just might) foster a bit of community spirit.
Perhaps the American Gardens in Finsbury Park could become a project for offenders?
Any other ideas?
Would be great to have some feedback from HCMS on these suggestions - will encourage further comment/community participation.
The Haringey community justice initiative does not yet generally cover N8. The areas covered are N4, N15 & N17. The reason for this is that these are the areas in the borough which generally suffer from the highest levels of social deprivation and corresponding quality of life crimes affecting residents in those areas. The initiative may expand further in future to cover N8, however, that would be somewhat dependant upon funding. There are 2 borough wide crimes that the initiative does cover- loitering for prostitution & solicit woman for prostitution.

We welcome unpaid work ideas from those living in N4, N15 & N17. These should be submitted giving the maximum possible amount of detail (including a photo & details of the owner of any land involved if possible) to:
GL-HARINGEYMCCJC@hmcourts-service.gsi.gov.uk Suitable ideas are then forwarded to the probation service who make the final determination of whether the work can be carried out.
Thanks for that - just so you're aware, probably only 25% of the area covered by this site is N8. The remainder id N4 with a dab of N15
