Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My daughter is going camping with her local Woodcraft Folk in the next fortnight and they will be building their own camp fire (with a little assistance from the grown ups).

While logs and dead wood is readily available, we are very short on kindling material, and I wondered whether any HoLers had any of the dry combustible stuff lurking around that they wanted rid of?

If it is garden prunings/cuttings etc it really must be dry and long dead to qualify as kindling I am afraid.

Happy to collect evenings or weekends in the next fortnight

Thanks

Dermot, if you just need a bit to get a single fire started I will happily donate a small bag of dry kindling. If you need a bit more I can let you have a bigger bag of pallet wood that is currently in small planks that I can let you chop up to make your own kindling- here (using my hand axe) or at your camp site...

There is nothing more amazing as a child than to be able to light your own fire. It is one of those fundamental skills many have lost or forgotten.

Message me.

Thank you Justin, that's really appreciated.

Completely agree on the fire building skills - first stage to becoming a bushcraft kid!

Get some Silver Birch Bark and a Pine Cone. Stuff the Silver Birch bark into the leaves of the pine cone, starting at the bottom and working your way all the way to the top.  Then, get three twigs. Turn the cone upside down and stick the three twigs in it to form a tripod. Put a bit of cotton wool, or better still thistle head fluff underneath it and then apply a spark or match. This will burn for a good five minutes to enable her to get a good fire going.

Great tip Reggie. I'll try that one myself first before risking it with the kids though!

I have a surfeit of kindling, mostly chopped up for me own fire, featuring many 'recycled' pieces of garden shed! If that helps give me a call. I am off White Hart Lane.

Thanks Philip. Can I get back to you once I've got an idea of the kindling I'm already collecting?
