Getting passport copy certified - need an official
I need to get a photocopy of my passport certified as true, and the possible certifiers include:
a judge
a magistrate
a justice of the peace
a registrar or deputy registrar at a court
a notary public
a police officer
Does anyone have any experience of approaching one of the above to get documents certified, or could you suggest how I could find a justice of the peace for example? Presumably I can't just approach a traffic policeman on the street to do this, though perhaps it's worth a try??

It has to be signed by someone who has known you for at least a year I think. I get mine signed by my sister in law who is a teacher. If you have school aged kids the head of the school may agree to do it. I think Doctors may do it too, for a fee.

Thanks, for the purposes of this certification it doesn't need to be someone I've known for any amount of time. Teachers and doctors aren't on the list of permitted people unfortunately, would make things much easier!

I think they will sign it at police station. They usually put an official stamp on it. They don't have to know you as it is only to confirm the copy is authentic.

Check this again, ii don't recall it being strict. I thought it just that the person had to be a "professional". I got my ex boyfriend to do it for me and he was a qualified engineer. I signed so many off for my employees when I was a manager, although I didn't hold a particular professional qualification for that position. My latest passport was signed off by a friend who is a medical professional but not a doctor or nurse. None of these were refused. A teacher can certainly do it. I think the list is just an example, and there certainly used to be a time limit which I think was two years that they have to know you for.

Thanks Lauren but this is for something in a different country and they have a specific list of qualified certifiers.

Sorry I misread it I thought you were wanting a new passport. I've just re-read and I can't understand how I thought that because it clearly says you want a certified copy! Multitasking error!

Thanks Michael, I didn't even really know what a notary public was. The website says a solicitor will charge £5-10 but a NP may charge 10 times that!! I will first try the police station option I think!

This has led me to find out that the British equivalent of a JP, a magistrate, is a voluntary position and that pretty much anyone can become a magistrate. Could be a really fascinating role! https://www.gov.uk/become-magistrate/apply-to-be-a-magistrate

Goodness me, seems a bit steep for the service of looking at a passport and then verifying that the copy is true!
