Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Every London borough now has the power to fine people for spitting in public after Communities Secretary Eric Pickles last month agreed to a fixed £80 penalty scheme drawn up by London Councils.

Three London councils have begun fining people for spitting in the street. Newham is apparently coining it in.

Following a Freedom of Information request, it can be revealed that the three boroughs who have already introduced bans have fined 689 people up to £55,120.

More here - http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/over-55000-raised-as-councils...

Does Haringey have the courage to follow suit, or will they say ( as has been said on here some time ago ) that it would infringe the rights of certain cultural groups ?

Excellent news! i hope this will reduce the amount of people who spit on our streets.

I read this and thought excellent. Nothing worse than seeing someone gob on the pavement in front of me.

Fixed penalties really work don't they? I don't tread in or dodge dog shit on the pavement at all. Not ever!

Kind of overkill I think. What about the amount of chewing gum spat on our lovely new pavements? Never really even noticed people spitting apart from into the gutter.....

Hands up who's never had to spit in public? Gruesome and unpleasant, yeah. How is this going to be enforced. Will we have officers following people out of Hospital with bronchial illnesses? Officers trained to hear a cough from the town hall?
If I have to I use a paper tissue, bit of newspaper or anything handy and throw it in the bin, though I rarely have to. The frequency of gobbing in London is so high that I sometimes think there must be an outbreak of bubonic plague we haven't been told about.
It's not something I notice so much that I see it as a massive issue, dog poo and litter, yes. Fixed penalties obviously don't work, perhaps an education campaign would.

Fixed penalties work quite well to regulate parking, box junctions, etc.

All you need is some enforcement and, such is the frequency of spitting round here, the fines would easily pay for the cost.

They don't work for anti social behaviour such as dog fouling and litter. I can't imagine a scenario where this would be enforced.

As you can see from the referenced news item, it seems to be enforced in at least three London boroughs and generates useful income. Why not ours ?

Posters in " relevant " languages might be seen as racist ?

People would ask " why no Klingon ? "

But how would it work? Who would they follow? Coughers?
