Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

MIPIM property fair shut down by protesters

Well done those people.

How many Haringey councillors and CEOs were trapped inside? They didn't even have to travel down to Cannes on special sponsorships from the likes of Grainger and Spurs to get there this year, so I bet the whole 'cabinet' went.

Yessss! :-)

Brilliant news! Because the main parties have signed up to the disaster of austerity,  councils cannot borrow to build. So they go cap in hand to the most rapacious of dodgy, greedy, exploiters.....has to be Green Party for me...

Pam, on 7 August 2014, in WhatDoTheyKnow.com there was a response to a Freedom of Information Act Request by our friend and neighbour Martin Ball.   Adam Hunt, Haringey's North Tottenham Area Regeneration Manager, clearly and unequivocally told Martin Ball that: "Haringey Council has no plans at present to attend MIPIM UK 2014".

I've no indication whatever that this turned out to be untrue and that Mr Hunt was given any information - and gave Martin Ball any information - that was not completely truthful and accurate.

So rather than criticise councillors and senior officers for being at MIPIM this week, when they weren't, shouldn't we be pleased?  And welcome this sign that Haringeys head honchos seem at long last to have learned something from the public fiasco in Cannes.

I realise that it's early days. But one small step for Cllr Alan Strickland could be one giant leap for Haringey. If we encourage them, Pam, maybe they could even be persuaded to change their minds about other aspects of their disgraceful housing policy - the damaging and unnecessary social cleansing programme they've announced; and the destruction of homes and businesses.

As Aditya Chakrabortty wrote in Tuesday's Guardian "even the smallest victory looks historic"  against the backdrop of London boroughs making: "rotten deals that jeopardise the livelihoods of their residents" .

Would be very happy to be proved wrong  if only because they're getting better at PR.

Pam, I don't see them getting better at PR.  Doesn't good PR need a bit more than a veneer of partial fact or vague obfuscation?  I think Claire Kober and her chums are getting more reliant  on PR. On using the Council's publicity machine to market illusion to residents. Though I wonder whether they themselves believe the guff they come out with.

A friend sent us a link to the Camden New Journal. It's about Alex Atherton a very successful ex-Haringey head teacher who's taken over Quintin Kynaston School in Camden. Which has had a "requires improvement" judgement from OFSTED.

What's impressive is his candour. And what seems a quiet determination to get on with the job of making improvements. Instead of, for example, denying problems; or even dressing-up the figures. I particularly liked Mr Atherton's comments that:
"... people are quite happy to be honest. We know where we are, we know what we need to do, we just need to do it”.
- and -
"I want us to be outstanding, not only be graded as outstanding.”

I simply can't imagine Claire Kober announcing that:

"I want our streets to be among the cleanest in London, not only graded as among the cleanest.

Guardian report.  Comments BTL largely in support. One long comment suggests that the crash is imminent, and gives reasons why this is likely.
