Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Was I the Last Person to Discover Haringey Freecycle (Free Recycled Stuff)?

I've added the parenthesised explanation in the heading because I'd seen this site for quite a while and always assumed that it was something to do with a local cycling campaiging organisation.

Not a bit of it; it's a site where local people offer anything they don't want for free - from cutlery, through shelving units and beds to TVs and sofas. So much stuff in fact that it struck me you could furnish a house from top to bottom for nowt.

It seems like if you dilly-dally too long the object you're after may be gone. But be nimble, be quick and you can take you pick.

The site is at haringey freecycle

Thanks for the info Hugh - another great find by you / someone else.

I have forwarded this to local friends / neighbours in the Gardens & to contacts that I have across Haringey.

Thanks again.

Ali Smith
You know you could just make your details up...? Nobody from Yahoo is going to check up on them so you'll be perfectly safe! It's well worth it to be be able to go on freecycle - help save the planet and keep things out of landfill!
Use my address: 6 linkway n4 1qf. I don't mind. I just use my yahoo account for freecycle anyway so I guess I could just give you my details? I'm not so bothered who has 'em - not a spy or anything and I don't really have anything to defraud by having my identity stolen what with being poor and having a terrible credit rating! Though I guess I'd rather not put my password up on here so if you really want I could email them to you.

I am amazed at the amount of good things people give away or get on Freecyle, but I have never quite worked out how to get in to it. I live in Hornsey backing on to Alexandra Park, so most of the news in Harringay Online isn't relevant to me.

Does anybody know how to join Freecycle - over the years I have tried quite a few times to do so but cannot find the way in,

Go to the Trash Nothing website and register there for the Haringey FreeCycle...I don't understand why it's the Trash Nothing site but they seem to be linked in some way. The other way to join if you have a yahoo email address is through the yahoo groups...not sure if you can join that way without a yahoo address though.

I also notice that ReStore are having a give and take day next Saturday (18th).

The listing for it is on Trash Nothing

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) in partnership with the London
Community Resource Network (LCRN) are delivering a series of re-use events
in North London, as part of NLWA’s waste prevention programme which
promotes reduction and reuse across North London.

LCRN / NLWA Give and Take Days – your chance to pass on items you no longer
need and pick up something you do for FREE.

Please note that you can only give: books, DVDs/CDs, garden ware, IT,
tools, clothes/shoes, small furniture, small electrical items and toys. We
also accept: large furniture and white goods.

FREE BULKY ITEMS COLLECTION - you can have large furniture and white goods
collected for free by registering with us. No items outside the North
London boroughs will be collected from households. Please note, collection
will depend on availability as we expect a high demand on this service and
that we will apply a First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) service policy.

During the events we will also be running clothes up-cycling activities and
repair workshops:

• Clothes up-cycling activities - you will learn how to create new
clothes, kitchen items, accessories and toys from old clothes.

• Repair workshop - you will have the opportunity to repair your own
electrical items and learn the most common DIY by participating to our
repair workshop. Please make sure you have deleted all your data from your
items and bear in mind we do NOT take responsibilities for your items.
FCFS service policy will be applied.

Slight word of warning here. I've used Freecycle to give away things several times and been let down by people who say they want the item I'm offering more times than I have had successes. Also, some people seem to have some kind of automatic reply set up so when you post an item you almost instantly get a generic message from someone registered on the site (something along the lines of "I would love your item" without actually stating what the item is)
So my advice would be that if someone says they want your item, really quiz them about when they intend to pick it up and get a contact number so you're not left hanging around all day.
The most success I've had is here, on HoL. Everything I've offered as been collected on time by a charming neighbour.
I've had the same experience as Michael, so I tend to offer things first here and only then on freecycle. But it is great for getting rid of things that you're sure someone, somewhere, could use!

My only really negative experience was someone who wanted a sofa we were getting rid of - and sent round a minicab to pick it up, without coming herself. We, and the cab driver, had to spend quite a while trying to fit the thing in. What a good mood we were in by the end! I thought that was a little bit cheeky...
Once had a young chap who collected a bookcase and then wheeled it off down the street by balancing it on a skateboard!

@alison Now that IS very cheeky!

I had someone pick up some CDs who asked if she could charge her phone and could she use my wi-fi!

I think with Freecycle there are 'professionals' who just say yes to everything so they get first dibs, then they go through afterwards and decide what they actually want so they can sell it and the unwanted stuff doesn't get followed up.

PS Hugh, can't believe you thought it was a cycling scheme!! For once not ahead of the curve.
I have received a few items from Haringey Freecycle I have certainly not sold the items on.
