Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Few reports of carriages filling with smoke on Twitter just now and the station is still closed. Anyone know what happened?

TfL twitter for Piccadilly line says station open and trains running now.

Which was a bit of an understatement, though there was no fire i.e. flames. As far as I understand from listening to BBC London, a train approaching the station had a fault on one of the traction motors that power the train (fumes/smoke in one carriage at least) so it stopped a bit short of the platform at Manor House.  Don't know the detail thereafter, but it was all resolved in 60 mins judging by the timings on Twitter.

BBC London report here.

Judging by the timing I think I must have been on the train behind that one - we stopped in the tunnel for about 10 minutes with no announcements at all and then went through an empty Manor House without stopping. No visible sign of any smoke/fire by then.

That's really bad (the lack of announcements) and surprises me as the team at these two stations are usually so good at dealing with anything untoward. Why didn't the drivers know what was going on or at least provide some information?

As someone who was only able to get on the tube at all after years of therapy, I rely on my faith in staff to keep passengers informed in exactly this type of situation. And I'm sure I'm not wholly unusual in this respect. Many of those passengers will now probably have difficulty using the tube in future - which as I found for most of my life is disabling in London.

Yes, it would be terrifying. It did seem quite odd as usually if you stop even for a minute or so they start telling you why and when you're going to move again. Nobody seemed very worried though - probably thought it was normal rush hour hold-ups.

Normally you can't shut them up can you!!  I suppose they can only communicate what they know, so if something more unusual happens (ie. not  just a red light or a broken down train) it must be more difficult.  They still should have said something though.  Even if it was only a "Don't PANIC"  Private Jones style....
