Hi all.
Has anyone else noticed how horrific the images are on a constant loop being beamed out of the windows of Ersan & Co opposite the Salisbury?
When it was first being refurbished, it was a mystery as to what it was going to be, then as the 'PERSONAL INJURY, 'ACCIDENT CLAIMS' and 'MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE' banners were unveiled it became clear that it is a ambulance chaser megamart.
So what right? These [sort of firms*] have to be based somewhere.
My gripe is that they show videos on a constant loop of all of the worst things which can happen. There is one video in particular which features an awful car accident where a car crosses into the oncoming lane and is obliterated by a truck. I have been in a couple of car accidents, and they are no joke, and it struck me that this is particularly inappropriate footage to be broadcasting to the general public 24 hours a day.
Also the monitors seem to be beaming these out at about a million lumens, they illuminate the whole street, thankfully my bedroom is not on the street side or I would need blackout curtains.
Who can I complain to? (Besides you lot...)

I guess you should complain to them! I think it's pretty awful really broadcasting videos of horrible accidents on massive screens and had been thinking the same as you. Wouldn't it be nice if they could use their screens to show nice photos of local scenes instead? And wouldn't it be ironic if someone crashed their car at the junction after being distracted by a video?
Hi Jackson
I would suggest you complain to Haringey planning department.
As I have stated on another thread, what Ersan have done is outrageous and makes a mockery of the planning system. Their initial application was for large illuminated banners and columns at each corner of the frontage with illuminated panels showing moving images; this was then refused and so they then submitted a more modest proposal which was for smaller name panels above the doors and windows. This was approved.
What then happened? They installed larger naming signs, put up additional signs screaming out the nature of their tawdry trade, illuminated the lettering - and then stuck enormous televisions in the windows showing baffling and banal promotional videos on an eternal loop.
My complaint to the planning department about the first violation has received - can you guess? - no response.
I really think it will take a judicial review or a civil claim to get the council to do anything.
God, it's awful, the whole thing. I went in there a couple of weeks ago to complain - they were very friendly but said that I shouldn't complain about seeing these images in the street as anyone can see this on youtube and tv... I made the point that I don't choose to see a car accident on my way to buy a pint of milk. I haven't seen the plasma screens on recently - so don't know if they've stopped showing it now?
I too noticed that they were switched off, at least during weekends. Perhaps they've woken up to the spectacularly bad press this is bringing their business?
I have seen these video screens; I understand that the Planning Department has opened a case, following a formal complaint by a local resident.

This thread began in mid-August 2014 at the time of a number of complaints by residents. There ensued feeble enforcement action that petered out.
I have no qualifications in Planning but nonetheless, pointed out the relevant regulations to the Council in early November. That was almost three months ago.
The key point was and is, that this unsavoury video is illuminated (obvious?).
I'm a Councillor for Highgate, but I often have to walk past this unlawful offensive display.
I now understand that the case has been reviewed and "We are currently preparing an enforcement notice for the site."
I'm not aware that local Councillors (of the Council Majority-Group in St Anns or Harringay Wards) have done much – or anything – on behalf of their residents in this matter, but would be happy to be corrected.
I do hope they might take more interest in local affairs especially when there is evidence of unlawfulness.

Might be worth trying the Solicitor's Regulation Authority to see what they have to say about it - the SRA code contains rules about publicity, and they be unimpressed if the firm's advertising is diminishing the reputation of solicitors generally.
Why are these awful screens still on? The videos displayed are shocking to a 40 year old like myself, so I can't imagine what impact they must have on impressionable young children in the area.
I know this kind of [*] business is not out to make the world a better place, but the sheer ugliness and aggressiveness of this shop front is nothing like our area has ever seen, and we have a lot of bold looking signs!
At a time when the area is coming up with lots of nice new bars and restaurant, they just come in and ruin it all with this purple monstrosity. Planning should be having a field day with them, I just can't understand why nothing's happened so far...

Time for the middle aged, middle classes to riot?
It was the best of signs, it was the worst of signs, it was the age of mediation wisdom, it was the age of litigation, it was the epoch of car smash, it was the epoch of car cash, it was the season of welcoming streetlight, it was the season of screaming shopscreens, it was the spring of new bars and restaurants, it was the winter of court orders and bailiff's letters, we had Green Lanes regeneration before us, we had Green Lanes video nasties before us, we were all going direct to St Ann's Road, we were all getting tickets for turning right at Hewitt —in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its most concerned cat owners insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, with the usual superlative images being displayed on all street-facing screens.
