Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A number of HOL contributors have suggested that there is a need for a Harringay Ladder Residents Association (RA) - in particular so that those residents can be represented on, or have access to, various Haringey Council Groups, such as the Finsbury Park Stakeholders Group; and can also present a united front to the Council on matters such as parking, rubbish collection, developments, etc as well as promoting appropriate cultural events.

Membership would presumably be open to residents aged over 16 within the following boundaries:

Green Lanes West, from Endymion Rd to Turnpike Lane

Turnpike Lane South, from Green Lanes to Wightman Rd

Both sides of Wightman Rd and Alroy Rd

       Endymion Rd

As a first step, it will be necessary to assemble a group of interested people to form an interim committee to discuss what form the RA should take and to agree a constitution, after which the RA can be formally established ( to be effective, an RA has to conform to various legal  requirements ) . It would be necessary at an early stage to consider whether the proposed Ladder RA would conflict with any other RAs in the catchment area.

I would like to hear from anyone who is prepared to take part in this initial work ( and it will involve work ) by email to macbeast76@hotmail.com,. Please give full name and your preferred email address and outline any special areas of expertise that could be useful to the RA.

If you have read this far, thank you for your interest

It is. I would encourage all of its members to recognise that.

Peter - this discussion is getting a bit circular. Some of the people on this website, and face to face, have been talking about the idea of a residents' association. If no one wants to get involved that is because either people feel there is no need for one or they are simply not interested and it won't happen.
I know nothing about the activities of the LCSP because I rely on electronic means to get most of my information and this website is what I read to find out what is happening locally as do an awful lot of people. Lots of stuff on here provokes agreement or disagreement but it's on here to look at. I do not understand why an organisation that represents me and my neighbours doesn't just post things for anyone to see rather than it being by request or having to be on a mailing list. I think if you regard HoL as an electronic version of an old fashioned noticeboard you might see where I'm coming from. If people do not know of the existence of the LCSP or the activities that might be of interest to them, how will they know that they have to be on a mailing list to find to out?
I also find it very difficult to physically attend meetings because of work and other commitments as I would imagine a lot of people do but I can read and respond to things on the train, at lunchtime or as I warm up my cocoa in the evening. Surely opening things up so that people can participate in the way that suits them best is to the benefit of the community and the LCSP
Fundamentally what I cannot understand is why the LCSP seems so opposed to the idea of a Ladder RA. If it gets more people involved locally isn't that good for the LCSP?

Michael

-Michael,

Why do you say the LCSP is opposed to the idea of a Ladder RA? I think all I & others have been saying is that a form of RA already exists and duplication doesn't really seem a best way of using limited resources. From my experience, running and maintaining LCSP is very time consuming and remember it is all voluntary. My invitation was for you to come to an LCSP meeting or join via the email address so that you would know what is already going on, that's all.

LCSP is not the only group on the block and there is always room for more groups, but I would've thought that you'd like to find out what was already happening before you launch your 'idea' which is why I have gone into some detail in recent posts for you.

I have spent more time answering questions on this thread than I would at a monthly meeting.

I can't always get to a meeting for similar reasons to yours - attendance isn't obligatory - so I read the agenda / minutes and communicate any input I feel necessary.

Face to face discussion can often lead to a rapid resolution - hence meetings. What would your concept do, regarding meetings, - video conference call?  Sounds expensive, and  quite time consuming to set up, but what do I know?

Gosh, this thread has really exploded into action, so much to read after a day away! Thanks for that post Peter, this seems like a good place to comment -
Hugh has clarified that there is no copyright issue with posting to HoL, and that he'd give moderation powers to a new group. People are expressing interest in some more interactive online thing in conjunction with the existing LCSP monthly meetings - why don't we just make a new HoL group and see what happens, as a sort of experiment?

You're asking questions about how would it work, and the answer to that is i don't think any of us really know, so why not try it and work it out?

The next LCSP meeting isn't till the 11th of September so that gives a month or so for us to experiment with an online group to see how it works and then you can take that back to the LCSP meeting to discuss and see if you think its useful and something the LCSP wants. It could end up as the online branch of the LCSP, it could be unworkable and we'll just close it down, or it could become something in between and complementary working in partnership with the LCSP.

What do you say?

- Ant

Speaking personally, I don't think the LCSP is broken so there is no need to fix it. As for experiments, doesn't one do them in a laboratory?

I'm sure that the LCSP would require a meeting to discuss your proposal and as you have pointed out the next meeting will be on September 11th when it could be on the agenda if members request it

Sorry Peter, re-reading this thread it looks like I've been bickering with you which was not my intention at all. On the issue of keeping up with LCSP activities, I would very much like to see minutes and activities posted where I can access them when it fits in with the other stuff I have to do.
Found this which pretty much describes what I would like to see from a residents' association on the Ladder.

Also found this description which describes a Community Safety Partnership

To me they feel different but complimentary.

-Michael,

Haringey Federation of Residents Association lists LCSP as a member. LCSP attends general meetings of the HFRA if and when an issue might be relevant to take to it. LCSP also receives communications from HFRA particularly when an issue might be borough-wide.

As I’ve stated in a previous post the LCSP is approximately 15 years old and at it’s inception which grew out of individual street Neighbourhood Watches it did have a primary focus on the policing and community safety. As time went on however it became apparent that community safety was not solely the domain of the police force and that planning, HMOs, the environment (street scene), refuse, pot-holes etc., etc. also had a major part to play in community safety so the LCSP began to address these issues as well.

The LCSP in it’s current form is a bit of a hybrid out of necessity - it works quite well in that format and has won numerous awards for it’s work.

Better Haringey Award 2005 (LBH)
Most Pro-Active Local Group 2006 (LBH)
Citizen Community Safety Award 2010 (LBH)
Team London Award 2011 (GLA)
Outstanding Service to Haringey NHW 2013 (Met. Police)

Well done on the awards. Here's our trophy cabinet.

- Hugh,

Congratulations!

We all seem to be doing the right thing in our own ways, what a wonderful situation to be in. Diversity brings it's own rewards.

I should have mentioned, there is no law against Supt Presland and his colleagues issuing harassment warning on virtually no evidence.
There is an interesting police performance chart that shows public confidence in the police in Haringey is 20% lower than the London average.. I wonder why that might be?
