Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Alarming smell of gas in the Passage leading up to Beresford Rd on Monday night

I was in the Passage this evening (Monday 28th) at about 6pm, close to the junction with Beresford Rd, and there was a very strong smell of gas. It was difficult to tell which side of the fence it was coming from - numbers 71 and 73 are the houses either side.

I called the emergency number and reported it, and so did another resident who lived nearby, but this is just by way of alert to any other people who live near the Passage on that road that you may want to come out of your houses and see if you can locate the smell, and/or check on your neighbours, if you can.

The gas people have been and gone already. We saw their vans but
Have'nt been out to see if the smell has gone. Can only hope it's sorted.

A neighbour alerted me to this post. The leak was coming from the house where I live, no 71. The boiler was apparently pumping out unburned gas at the flue. National Grid came out and capped the gas meter. Boiler is still faulty, but this is a rented house, and all tenants are being evicted as of tomorrow. The boiler will not be fixed at the moment. I am informing the lettings agency which manage the property (Easy Properties at Turnpike Lane station). The house will be vacant and under renovation as of Friday 1st August.

Good to know it's been dealt with (or at least that it's no longer a danger). You may want to check when the last gas inspection was done - as tenants you've the right to see the inspection paperwork - and if it has been done over a year ago or they can't find the paperwork, you may have a case to complain or, perhaps, get some compensation.

Inspection was done recently, and all was signed off as safe. The boiler stopped working in June last year, and a series of engineers came and advised that the boiler was decrepit and needed replacing, but the agency eventually found someone who said he could fix it for cheap. I can't say I'm surprised at the latest development.
