That's a pretty ordinary lens. I'd love to see what a 400 or 600 with an extender tube could do on a night like last night. On the other hand, if you're shooting on an APS (non-full frame SLR) body, a 300mm would be a bit like shooting with a 450 on the camera I'm using.

Aha! thanks for that. Its a stunning shot; though I'm surprised there is no haze around the moon there was when I was looking at it, though maybe because you used 1/200 sec. Did you have any filters on?

I'm not sure about the haze. I'm not much of an astrophotographer. A quick Google tells me that it could be the result of thin cirrus clouds. Could this be it? Could we have been looking at different times? I took the shot above at about 00:45. If it's not cloud haze, could losing the haze just be a result of dialling down the exposure and losing it through that?
