Hi HoLers,
Does anyone know what the (approximate) pH of our clay-like Harringay soil is? (Ladder-side if it matters). I'm wondering about adding a camelia to our back garden, but don't have any of the litmus strips I should've saved from schooldays...
Thanks so much!
Hi Somo. Every garden has a different pH fingerprint - hope this helps http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/soil-ph-test-kit-762397
Look at other gardens to see what is growing. There are several old and prolific camellias on my ladder street and I inherited a beautiful camellia grown as a 'standard' (tree). There are plenty of sites on line with advice on planting/ growing them but perhaps wait until autumn to plant.
"Camellias are best planted in the spring or autumn with some leaf mould, peat or farmyard manure incorporated into the planting pit ideally with a sprinkling of fertiliser."
