Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I need to brush up my very basic and rusty Spanish. There have been a few posts in the past but they're all over a year old and probably out of date.

Is there an informal conversation group meeting in or around Harringay ?

I have been using Gumtree for quite a while now to exchange English with a Spanish speaker. I have found it an excellent source of  conversation and company. Almost without exception my exchange partners have been interesting and engaging people who have understood how to use language levels. Yes they do tend to go back to Spain or Latin America but there are many Spanish speakers who struggle to find native speakers to practice with as they want to improve their skills, and to be honest, many people in London do not speak English fluently.

Thanks Philip. Is this on-line chat or face to face ?

If you go to Gumtree London, under Community, there is a language swap section. I have always picked someone I think suitable rather than some young person(young I ain't!) I also get someone who is available during the day which suits me. Usually its a jobseeker or student and we meet up once or twice a week at cafe etc for a chat. Usually I post rather than respond so people have an idea of what I am like.

Thanks for that Philip. Good thinking.

Thanks also Maggie but their website is rather intimidating re beginners

You could always try Spanish "Meet Up",
http://www.meetup.com/spanish-30/
They organise social events e.g. going to the pub or to see a Spanish film, or having a picnic and advertise it on their site. Anyone can attend as long as they interact mostly in Spanish. Its not for absolute beginners but people are quite forgiving if you have just a moderate amount of Spanish.

Just pop into the indoor market above Seven Sisters tube - the Latin American market (actually it's only 50% thus but that's the main culture). Open 9-ish to 6-ish Mon-Sat, but Saturday is THE day, families come from all over. Yes Latin American Spanish is slightly different from Castillan, but it's quite subtle - I'm told it's easier to follow than in Spain as they speak a more pure form. (I had problems in Andalucia because of the very thick accent there which includes dropping final consonants.)   This way you get to practice Real Life ie buying a beer, doing some shopping, and watching unfathomable videos, also there's loads of people passing the time who may like to chat.

Tube from Fins Pk, bus 259 or 279 from Manor House, Overground from Haringey Green Lanes to SoTo, 41 from Turnpike Lane, 243 from up north.

Ha Ha too true Pamish. We stayed in the Andalusian hinterland last year and though my Spanish is not great it is functioning. Couldn't understand a bloody word, but they could understand me! I find LA Spanish quite a lot easier to understand, but its useful to practice the Castiliano or you will be struggling in Spain. I used to meet some of my 'intercambianos' at the cafe at the market;actually quite a cheap place and handy for transport! Off to Barcelona this year. Never been before!
