Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This website contains no traditional advertising. Ever wondered who funded it? Well a few members have stumped up for the costs so far. Recently some of us decided that we'd accept advertising for a trial period from "local" businesses.

I think accepting money from advertisers is a mistake. I would prefer that the funding continues to come from philanthropic site members. I think advertising on here should take the form of blog and forum posts as it does at the moment and that we accept no money for this.

What do others think?

Johnny, Richard didn't come along and direct proceedings of the street party. He ain't like that. He's got better things to do. So I don't follow your objection particularly.
This website is not a party!!!!
I'm being serious. Please can you be serious too. I did not say there was anything WRONG with business people or rich people.

Rich people who do not want control over their money are like poor people who do.

Well I did say at the start of this post that it might just be that I am mad. I really wish I could explain what I meant but I deliberately left my own opinions out at the beginning because I hoped someone else would say the right thing and I could just say "yes, that's what I mean".
John (replying to your comment below), I think you were absolutely right to blow this open to the wider member network as it has turned into a very useful discussion and I think you'll find Optique's reasoning spot on (to your liking).

The monkey above just doesn't understand what 'Rich people who do not want control over their money are like poor people who do' means! :)
Neither exist.
Again, I am hope I am not speaking out of turn but 120 quid is a skeleton price for the site, that doesn’t include a lot of the features, advertisements from Google of which there is no control and other add-ons that make the site more pleasurable and informative. It’s more like £300-500 if you include all the costs of the site.

HOL will be approaching a small number of local businesses that offer something to the community. It is a very difficult to decide what is or isn’t appropriate for HOL but HOL is steering clear of bigger national and international chains as it wants to support local even if that local business has other ventures around London. This is all a trial and in 6-12 months HOL can decide whether it has been a success or not and chose if to carry on?
"....or to send a telegram or pigeon. This is the 21st Century : )"

I rather preferred the last one actually :-)
Yes, I've mentioned this several times. As a charity HoL could actually start making on the ground real life changes to this area with funding behind it and applying for projects as necessary. There are loads of people on this site with so many different skills who could get involved any way and as little amount of time they liked to better this neighbourhood. It's staring us all in the face.
Whether the website's the best forum for that is another matter though, eh. The website is airing the issues, connecting people etc. There is, of course nothing stopping people using the site as a vehicle to set up a Harringay body, such as a development trust, which I mentioned in my much read charter post.
Anna, I'll send you a 'friends request' so we can talk more on this because I think you're on the right track.
