Struck Off - Dr Ali in Green Lanes
This was on BBC TV news tonight - the sign flashed passed me and I thought- I recognise that sign, scrolled back and took a photo. The sign is on the front of a large house in Green Lanes near the mini Tescos and the Salisbury.
The guy was willing to arrange (for an undercover reporter) that FGM be performed on her fictious nieces- what they call female circumcision, what the UN defines as torture, what we call Female Genital Mutilation - they perform it on teenage girls, often without anaesthetic. Now apparently they are attempting to bypass British law by performing FGM on girls that are younger and younger and in some case babies.
It is absolutely against the law here and the government has mounted a campaign to stamp it out. This guy has been struck off by the BMA because of it.

Sorry, but how is this a council matter? It is not the job of the council to act on criminal activity other than to inform the police.

All Doctors in the UK (NHS or Private) need to registered and hold a licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC).
If he (as the title of the post suggests) has been struck off, then it is the register he has been struck off of. He he committed a crime then its the police.
If however, he parked illegally, it is the council. I think.

You both maybe right... now that he is struck off. One to keep an eye out on as he may come back unlicensed.

If she had asked him to take part in a bank robbery, and he had agreed, he would be looking at ten years in prison, so I suppose money is valued over the lives of children.

I meant that this is about women (50% of the electorate) not children (don't have the vote).

FGM is carried out on children, and though females are the ones who suffer this abuse, men have as much responsibility as women to ensure the health and safety of us all.

Many, many crimes are committed against children and nobody does anything so I don't think framing this as an issue with children is as helpful as saying it's one with women. If FGM were a disease with an expensive inoculation process as the cure we would be getting on with it, there's some ridiculous cultural thing going on here that people are afraid to open up as it can lead to the questioning of other ethnic/religious practices.

The reason I emphasised children is that many cultural practices ie baptism, confirmation etc are carried out before people can make choices. FGM is carried out on children partly because they are powerless. And while circumcision is not perhaps the most serious concern, were it only carried out on adult males, I doubt the practice would have been accepted.

I see this leading to a prohibition on cutting your children's finger- and toe-nails, not to mention dragging your five-year olds to the barber's for a regular shearing.
