I've noted some diffidence elsewhere about our new benches. Whilst, were money were no object, some people might have chosen another style, I thought it just worthwhile adding a note here from another perspective.
Recently, I was watching a TV report on Manchester's bid to become the UK's most age-friendly city. A couple of the older people they spoke to mentioned how important benches are to older citizens. So when I passed a bench in one of the Gardens roads headers this morning and saw two older Cypriot ladies taking a breather, I stopped to have a quick word. I asked them what they thought about the benches. They were full of praise and enthusiasm and told me that the benches made a real difference to their lives.
It was nice to see our street life expanding to include this age group hanging round on street corners and chatting. So roll on Harringay benchlife.

ASBOs all round?
This one is handy Hugh being right next to a very busy bus stop where you can't actually sit on those silly bits of plastics and usually so many people are crowded in there. Those weary and tired or with shopping can sit on the bench while waiting for the 29 etc. Or while waiting for their take away etc. It's a nice gesture (You see, I'm not always grumpy!)
