Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few years back I helped to set up the Bowes and Bounds website. Now I'd like to nick one of their ideas.

The website has been used as a channel to set up an event that seems to have become a staple in the local calendar. Freelance Fridays are aimed at people who freelance, work from home or are involved with a local small business.

The event listing says:

Use this group to tell others about your work, share ideas, swap contacts, or just get out of the house and speak to other people.

A year or so back, Matt Gamble set up a local business network via HoL, which seemed to work well for the quite small group it attracted.

Just this week I was referring a bit of business to a Ladderite I met through that group. I've got some commercial photography work through it and apparently others from the group have also got some good slugs of work.

In spite of this and despite the efforts of Matt and Geoff to keep the group going it didn't ever quite take off. I'm wondering if the format was wrong.

The Freelance Friday concept is much simpler. It's just an informal networking opportunity (I think). Bowes Park is further than I want to go for a drop-in, but I'm attracted to the concept. It's both social and commercial.

Is anyone else interested? I'm not going to volunteer to organise it, but all it would take (I think) is a posting on HoL every now and again and some initial chats with a cafe owner.

Hello,

I work from home specialising in Creative Marketing i would be interested how ever the area isnt of interest would need to be somewhere that local bussiness could also get involved where if we had a meet we could invite them to come and disucc work with us on say a lunch break i think muswell hill costa?

Muswell Hill not very convenient for Harringay people- two bus journeys! I try to avoid chains if possible. HoL has a good reputation for supporting independent small businesses in the local area.

If you mean that Harringay as an area isn't of interest, then I'm horrified. You're clearly a heretic Nicola-rae and were I not completely numbed by what you wrote, I'd no doubt be calling for you to be taken in front of the Harringay Inquisition!

It looks like Nicola that you have something bigger on your mind and Harringay is not enough for you.

If you would like to create a group like this on Muswell Hill area and attract more business good luck.

Muswell Hill for Harringay is not very local and travelling between them is attractive just for few.

Practically, not possible for longer

There is in fact already a community networking group in Muswell Hill, so our aim is to definitely keep rooted in Harringay.

Hi Everyone,

There were 6 of us who met last Friday at Jam in a Jar. We had a lovely lunch/coffee and enjoyed an informal chat about our companies and business cards were swapped.

I realise that there are a lot more of you who would like to make this a regular event, so I'd like to encourage you to join the Local Business Network group, whether you are a freelancer or local business owner.

This will allow us to survey the group for your requirements for both a casual freelancers meet up and for those that are keen for more formal business events. (refer post Rejuvenation of the Local Business Network group!)

Karen

thanks Karen! I will join the LBN right away!

Hi Karen

So what is the time for the next meeting in May?

Hi Marek,

I am hesitant to announce the next one until we have polled the group (in a week or so). I will update this post.

Karen

We have Easter and May Day Bank holidays all coming up so I guess some lucky folk will be away. Good luck with bringing people together Karen. Hopefully I can attend the next meeting.

This looks like a great idea! As you say, it can be really informal and a great opportunity for those of us who work in the lonely world of freelancing (!) to get together. Networking always pays off in one way or another!

I'd suggest meeting at Shamata on Green Lanes (corner of Duckett Road) - they do great cakes and biscuits (or real food) and it's not full on Friday afternoons.

Anyone else up for this? I'd be happy to talk to the women who run Shamata about expecting a group of people in on Fridays.

Sara

I wasn't able to make the last one, but would be very interested in the next!
