Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is this area full of spitters? Every time I go for a walk I come across quite a few. What prompted me to post this was a walk up from Homebase on Saturday. First a chewing gum nearly landed on my shoe. It was spat out of the window of a car waiting to escape from the Arena retail park. I made it clear to the spitter that that was disgusting. Then a young girl turned around as she was entering a shop on Green Lanes, and spat out through the door. A bit further up a man was gathering phlegm from deep, deep within before he deposited what he managed to find right on the pavement in one big, horrid, sticky glob.
I have actually stopped people in the past, telling them that their behaviour is disgusting, and have actually received a few apologies!
Is spitting now socially acceptable? Are people so used to it they don't stop and think about how unhygienic and horrid it is? And how can we make them think about what they're doing? Posters? On the spot fines? Who would fine them?

Thank you Birdy, that last sentence saved you. ;) No, this is not the opera, but this is where I live, and I don't want to have it on my shoes or anywhere else on my person for that matter. Nor do I want TB.
There's a time and a place, and anytime on Green Lanes is NOT it. I feel ill every time I hear someone start getting ready for a big green slimey one, you know the noise, starts way down the throat. Please do not tell me this is a human right. It's horrid.
I wish I could make them lick it up..

As for the rough edges, fair enough to a certain degree, but do they have to be so slimy?

I'm considering taking up spitting as a first line of defence against the cats that shit in my front garden. Either that or a high voltage electric fence, although burglars would probably sue for reinstated access. I've started using speeding skip trucks as target practice as I've given up on the police doing anything about their illegal use of our roads.

Time for a poster campaign.
BRILLIANT! Mind you, I have never ever seen spitting like it's done in China, it's a national sport!
I never saw anyone anywhere smoke with one hand whilst eating food with chopsticks in the other till I travelled China ... and haven't seen this since! :)
that's multitasking for you!
Spitting in public used to be illegal - has this changed?

Spitting in the street is disgusting and unnecessary. I used to run half-marathons and nobody spat. As for peeing in the street, up against walls, lamposts, cars - is my prejudice against this bourgeois too ?
I don't think so. I think somewhere deep down in the rulebook somewhere there's a fine. But no-one seems to be fined for anything around here, so it's a free for all.
Also, people are getting increasingly disgusting and so our (well, some people's) tolerance levels have gone up, and it's become the norm.

Peeing in the street is absolutely disgraceful, and I have no idea how to stop that. It's normally happening outside off licenses and such, the wall next to the Lion King stinks to high heaven, and I often see some bloke displaying tramp-like behaviour, taking a leak against the wall. Surely the shop owners should have a resposibility to stop their customers peeing on their shop?
