A short time back a new version of the Community Volunteers programme was quietly launched with us old lags from the CV days invited back to participate.
Unfortunately, personal circumstances meant I've not been able to attend the first couple of meetings but wearing my new EC hat (what does an Environmental Champion Hat look like?) I'm more than happy to to pass on this info about book recycling in the borough due to appear in the next couple of weeks.
A new method of recycling in the borough is about to be launched. Veolia have linked up with the educational charity READ International to provide dedicated book recycling points throughout the borough.
The books from the banks will be sold or recycled to raise revenue for READ to purchase locally relevant and up-to-date books in Tanzania. The aim is to extract as much value as possible from every book collected – no book is ever sent to landfill.
The scheme has already been piloted by Veolia in London in the City of Westminster, where over 12,500 books were collected within the first six months alone, and in Lambeth, Kingston-upon-Thames and Tower Hamlets.
The banks will be located in the following locations:
The book banks are due to be put in location in the next two weeks. Look out for them.
Please let people know that they are there and what they are for.

Oh well, we don't read in N15. Shame, this would have saved me some trips to Oxfam in Dalston.
The walk to the Town Hall Approach Road is surely not THAT far? Nearer than Dalston at any rate.
Postcode Wars means I only scan for N15 so I am oppressed by this as I'm only protected on my patch. N17? Here be dragons.
I must enter N8 to get to my nearest book bank but being an Environmental Champion I am fearless in my pursuit of recycling opportunities. *puts on EC hat and determined expression*
I'm also in N15 but the trusty No.41 bus will take you to the one at Turnpike Lane. Not only that, but it'll take you back again!!
