Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Councillor Nilgun Canver found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice

A jury at Wood Green Crown Court today found Councillor Nilgun Canver guilty by a majority of ten to two after more than a day of deliberation.

Nilgun Canver was accused of lying to police after her son crashed the family’s car in Tottenham in January, 2013.

According to the Haringey Indy, before passing sentence, Judge Fraser Morrison said: “This was a short period of lunacy on your part and your good sense of judgement had parted from you.

“Perhaps you thought you were protecting your son but your attempts to pull the wool over the police officer’s eyes was short-lived and were doomed to fail, as you see now.”

Cllr Canver was sentenced to a conditional discharge of one year and was ordered to pay costs of £500 and a £15 victim surcharge. She was told by the judge, 'I don't suppose a court will ever be seeing you again.'

Very sorry to hear this.

Too late for Nilgun but, read this advice from a policeman, before you need it.

Does this disqualify her from holding office?

Considering the alternative (eg 6 months for Vicky Price) this is a bearable punishment I'd think.

What happened to the son?

Apparently a conditional discharge is not a punishment and therefore she should have been allowed to stand in St Ann's.

Apparently you're right. The disqualification criteria is as follows:

You have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more (including a suspended sentence), without the option of a fine, during the five years before polling day.

"Can you stand for election?", Electoral Commission.

So firing Nilgun was opportunism from Claire Kober so she could have a clearout in St Ann's?

Before concluding that you'd have to do some digging around into Part III of the Representation of the People Act 1983 - check the next criterion in the Electoral Commission paper.

Well considering what Sheila Peacock is rumored to have done and is still in her position I'm going to say it was opportunism.

Politics in Haringey is pretty nasty business.

I'm also told that there was a London Labour Party Ruling stating that Cllr Canver was ineligible to stand. The person who told me this said they have been unable to find any authority for that ruling in the Labour Party Rule Book.

In other words, the situation is as complex as you might expect.

John, this is worth a pint. Are you coming to the Our Tottenham meeting on Saturday?

A conditional discharge is a punishment albeit a relatively painless one. If Nilgun is charged with any other offence in the next year she will be punished for this offence as well as the new one.

I don't think Nilgun's found this process very painless. She lost her job as a cabinet member (guessing around £40K a year) so bumped back down to £10K a year and that job will disappear too come May as she was not allowed to stand for her seat in St Ann's (which in hindsight was ridiculous).
