Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Kebabs are great but wouldn't it be nice to have some more proper fish and chip shops in the area?

Couldn't agree more. Shame to see independants close but in this case, the food and service was terrible. I couldn't stand the place
Wood Green has a good one. Down from the station on the corner of Lordship Lane.

In case people haven't spotted it, the Guardian had a short news item about Britain's best fish'n'chip shops.  (23 January)  Fish'n'chips is described as "an industry which, quietly and unpretentiously, is in the throes of a revolution".  Though it's not that quiet as the winners - Quayside in Whitby, North Yorkshire - are pictured together with a "celebrity chef".

It's categorised by The Guardian as a "Lifestyle" topic. Which I'd guess confirms the change from working class cheap food staple to an upmarket status - marking the price and relative scarcity of many types of fish.

It's nearly thirty years since we were last in Whitby. In my fading memories one of the treats was fish and chips from another local shop - an old fashioned, very busy and completely unpretentious place where an apparently endless stream of people hurried away with hot packages from an equally endless stream of ultra-fresh battered fillets. If it's the same place, that's now a proper restaurant which even serves clam chowder.

Anyone on HoL from the Whitby area or a regular visitor who has seen the changes?

I think the "posh fish and chips" is not a particularly new thing - this place in Anstruther, Fife has been a very well to do place for many years, with dining tables, wine, awards and now gluten free days!

I'm not a regular over that sort of period of time but the last few years I've been going to the Magpie in Whitby when I've been visiting the area. I think they're probably the best I've had in the UK (and obviously best in the world, since we do F&C best here! ;))

Having been in London a few years I've been only occasionally impressed by takeaway fish and chips - the best in the local area in my view is Tollington's just off Stroud Green Road. Always enjoyed theirs. And if I was eating in, Toffs in Muswell Hill is expensive but worth it for the treat, and I would recommend everyone trying North Sea Fish Bar near St Pancras. It's on Leigh Street.

And another vote for George's St Ann's. Admittedly it is just round the corner, but tasty chips, good fish and batter and enormous portions. The other day we got a fish supper and an extra sausage which fed two adults and two children for less than £9. And that wasn't a large portion.....

Thank you to those here who highlighted George's on Tottenham Lane . Hadn't clocked them before. Just had an excellent fish super. Fish (ordered small option) was huge! The chips excellent with good variety of sizes including the all important crispy small chips - yum!

Got into conversation with George about a framed photo (located at the back of his shop) showing the front of the old Lotus showroom and those beautiful cars (which used to be located where Jewson's is now, a little further back down Tottenham Lane). He said very excitedly that he'd had a customer in last week who mentioned that his dad used to be a salesman at that showroom. Nice guy is George.

Great F&C shop. George's on St Anns is now the backup option.
