Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As many of you will know Haringey Council's cabinet have agreed to increase the number of large commercial concerts that can be held in Finsbury Park from 5 to 15 days. Despite the objections of local residents and local councillors this decision will mean that large areas of the park will be out of bounds to residents and families for periods in the summer, this together with the poor management of previous events is a huge worry.

A special meeting of the council's watchdog committee, Overview and Scrutiny, has been called on Monday 6 January 2014 at 6pm at the Civic Centre to allow the decision to be examined by backbench councillors who will make a decision whether to refer the decision back to the cabinet for further consideration, refer the decision to full council or allow the decision to stand.

The meeting is open to the public.  Any one who wishes to speak at the meeting will be allowed at the discretion of the chair but it would be advisable to contact the council prior to the meeting if you wanted to speak.

Personally i hope the concert increase is approved. Probably in the minority on this, but I think to get such an established festival like Wireless for Finsbury Park is a massive coup for the area and puts it even more on the map. Likewise Arctic Monkeys playing there next year too. I went to the Stone Roses concert and there was a real buzz about the place. Plus we can walk home afterwards. Bonus!

Also went to the Stone Roses concert but didn't have to pay as I enjoyed it from my living room for several hours.
But Paul, I can choose if I wish to go to see and hear the circus or the fair. Concerts come to my house whether I want to hear them or not.

I think he was being ironic

Where's the ironic emoticon when you need it John!

Me too, always happy to back up a pro-concerts argument :)

I'm also someone who regularly uses the park (I'm a runner and I go there for picnics in the summer) and even during set-up of these events I wasn't particularly inconvenienced. It's fantastic to be able to go and see a major band and walk home afterwards - the more the better (though that 'more' should also include toilets).

Quite honestly, the only thing I do find to be an inconvenience and a nuisance is the funfair. How many weeks of every year is that there? Yet nobody seems to complain...

I attended the Scrutiny meeting last night and a major outcome was that Cllr Gina Adamou suggested the set up of a Finsbury Park Strategy Group which involves residents and stakeholders in the future of events and the park. Cllr Bull demanded that officers set this group up as soon as possible.
