Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I went to the pool at Tottenham Green today, after a break of several months, and it is in a disgraceful state of disrepair. Almost half the lockers in the women's changing rooms are out of use ('unsuitable for using' as the notice would have it - actually just broken or lacking a key). The spinner for wet costumes is out of action, there is no hairdryer and the place was freezing cold (though the water erred on the side of overheated). Also apparently the disabled shower cubicle has no shower head.

I asked when the promised refurbishments would be taking place, as they are obviously letting it all run down to nothing, but nobody seemed sure - they mumbled something about 'next month' with a shrug which implied that they had heard that story before.

I think after more than a year, it is clear that Fusion are not a fit company to run a public facility like this - it's one thing not to spend any money on doing it up, but quite another to gradually allow the facilities to become unusable. After all, we are still paying to get in, and I wouldn't be surprised if Haringey council were still shovelling money into the service.

Funnily enough, I spent forty minutes in the water there yesterday and I've felt cold ever since. Not only that, but I tried to book swimming lessons for next term for our children - who have been learning there for years - and YET AGAIN was told, AFTER PAYING, that they had not been able (for some unknown technical reasons) to book both our children onto "the system". This is a perennial omni-shambles which it seems no-one at the swimming pool or at Fusion has the slightest idea how to sort out.

I would go to Park Road instead but my experiences there have been even worse...

Does ANYONE from these firms read this website? They must do, surely? What about the manager - will he or she not come on here to respond?

What is wrong with Park road..? I was planning to try them out..

The "Cabinet" councillor in charge of sport is Richard Watson (richard.watson@haringey.gov.uk).  Richard is also one of the councillors for Tottenham Green ward. I suggest you copy the Dear Leader Cllr Claire Kober (claire.kober@haringey.gov.uk) and the other ward councillors Bernice Vanier and Isidoros Diakides. (bernice.vanier@haringey.gov.uk and isidoros.diakides@haringey.gov.uk)

I don't suppose you have any photos?

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

It's a poor start of affairs. My daughter trains there as she's in the development squad. We are regularly getting emails that training is cancelled because the pool is too cold or whatever reason. I haven't been there for a while but since fusion took over it just stinks in there of urine.

Re private- Isn't that part of the problem though, that a private company now runs TLC rather than the council.

I know. It's hideous. I went to tg for swimming for months but can no longer bear the state of the changing rooms. I've been going to park road and it is far far better. There are free hair dryers. The clothes drying machine works. The showers are not filthy. They have installed a drinking water machine. They have also not messed around with closing the pool on the weekends as they now do at tg in the afternoons. I was listening a while ago to people complaining in tg that crouch Enders were treated better than those in tottenham and sadly I have to agree. So it's worse than fusion being incompetent. It very much looks like they've made a choice about where to spend their money and it isn't tg.....

As well as posting on this site, has anyone raised these issues as formal complaints with Fusion? Or the Council?  If so, can I suggest copying them to the "cabinet" councillor Richard Watson. richard.watson@haringey.gov.uk

I'd normally suggest writing to senior managers in the Council, but currently the executive sun-loungers are being moved around the deck  another restructure is in progress. But I'm sure Richard knows what's going on and which buttons are worth pressing.

As another correspondent has pointed out, the problem is with Fusion, not just Tottenham Green Leisure Centre. That is, Fusion are not fit to run these services for us.

Park Road pools now seem very shabby and run down in comparison to how they used to be. Paint is peeling everywhere. Many of the lights over the main pool are not switched on which can only be a money saving policy.

The other day the diving pool was closed due to staff shortages. The is an excuse (for a money saving exercise) we have had with the outdoor pool. (Discussed on this website).

I would also say that, at Park Road, I've never seen lifeguards LESS interested in keeping on eye on swimmers. When I was there the other day the lifeguards there were, were all congregated down one end chatting to each other with their backs to the pool.

At the time it occurred to me that the whole place was being run down for some reason. A reason we can only guess. Conspiracy theory?

Children, and adults, are constantly accused of not getting enough exercise. How can they when public services are not fit for purpose?

Could someone suggest what we council tax payers can do about this? This is so unfair - to everyone.

Laura, my partner Cllr Zena Brabazon has emailed Cllr Richard Watson asking him to read this thread and take up these problems with the management at Fusion. He's a thoughtful reliable man and I'm certain he will do exactly that.

In the meantime if anyone posts something they want to tell a "cabinet councillor", do please email them.  firstname.secondname@haringey.gov.uk

if you copy the link into your email it's quicker and easier for them to find your comment and the thread.

Anyone unsure of how to do this, please hover your mouse over the double-zero link sign. It will say "permalink to this reply".  Right-click. Then left-click on  "copy link location".  Paste into a short email to the person you want.

Ok. Thanks a lot Alan. I'll be keeping an eye on the activities of Fusion in Haringey.

Laura. Park road is not good. But tottenham green is worse. Sadly.

At Fusion we are committed to providing the best possible service to the local community through the leisure facilities we manage. We have rigorous internal processes in place which enable us to identify, manage and repair maintenance issues that occur throughout the facility. These are monitored on a daily basis and repaired as soon as possible. We value the comments we receive from customers and below have provided feedback on the points that have been raised here. We proactively seek customers feedback and would encourage you complete one of our customer comments cards in centre, to contact us on Haringey.redev@fusion-lifestyle.com or attend one of our regular Meet the Manager sessions. You can also find answers to some recently asked questions here http://www.fusion-lifestyle.com/centres/Tottenham_Green_Leisure_Cen...

Why is there a lack of working lockers in the female changing room?

In total we currently have 130 lockers in the female changing room, of which 8 are broken and a further 15 are missing keys. Where possible we attempt to repair the broken lockers and replace the missing keys, however work is due to start in mid-December to provide temporary changing facilities whilst the redevelopment works are ongoing.  New lockers will be available in these temporary facilities.. We feel the number of usable lockers meets the current demand and will therefore not be replacing them before this move. We will however ensure we improve our communication to customers so that you are fully aware of the situation and understand the reason behind these decisions.

Why doesn’t the hair dryer in the female changing room work?

Currently hair dryers are not provided in the female changing rooms; instead customers have been historically been using the hand dryers to dry their hair. We have however identified a fault with one of the existing hand dryers, which is in the process of being repaired. With the temporary changing facilities we will be providing new hair dryers and hand dryers for customer use.

The spin dyer does not work in the female changing room

As part of the design of the temporary changing facilities, we will not be providing spin dryers. As they are maintained by the manufacturer it has not been possible to have them repaired before this date, however we will ensure that we better communicate this fact to our customers.

Why is the shower head missing in the disabled cubicle?

This broke over the weekend and a replacement part has been ordered. We will repair this as soon as the part arrives.

Why is the air/water temperature so cold?

We have experienced a number of technical issues with the boilers at Tottenham Green which has affected both air and water temperatures. Specialist engineers are called to site as soon as these issues are identified and they are rectified as soon as possible. We do not wish to close any facility and only ever do so for the safety and comfort of our customers. As part of the redevelopment works we will be installing new boilers and air handling units to resolve this issue.

Why can I not book swimming lessons on-line?

We have reviewed the system and currently can’t find any issues, nor have we received any other customer comments. If you experience any further problems please contact the centre directly on 020 8885 7300.

Why have the changing rooms started smelling of urine since Fusion took over?

The changing facilities are cleaned on a regular basis and checked every few hours by a member of the team. Cleanliness and hygiene are of the utmost importance and any such incident would be dealt with immediately. We continually review customer customers and do not have another record of similar feedback. However we will continue to monitor this and act swiftly should a situation arise.
