Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We had a leaflet from haringey today saying that the decision to reverse the traffic flow had been shelved and instead a no right turn would be put in place, along with penalty cameras.
I think it is a shame that the reverse traffic flow has been halted as I think that would have genuinely helped with our problems on Hewit but I wondered what anyone else thought. There is a chance to respond about this decision to the council.

Thanks Ant, very interesting!

87 vehicles an hour - that's nuts (1480/17hrs, 7 night hours being insignificant). Need to reduce this. Back on the case.

Does your counter distinguish between cars and other vehicles ?

It can measure the pressure on the hose so could make guesses about if its a car, motorbike or truck, but we'd have to do some experiments to see how reliable that was.

I'm presuming some of the traffic at the peak times of 8-9am and particularly around 15.30 is school traffic - which I find surprising given that South Harringay has such a small catchment area.

It has a small catchment area because of all the siblings who no longer live in Harringay. This is exactly what we should expect to see. Some people even drive over from the gardens!

Definitely worth a try. Just a shame they didn't trial the reversal.

Part of the reason the reversal would have been so good for us is that going uphill instead of down would have calmed the speed of the traffic. Hewit is one of the steepest roads on the ladder and the slope causes causes cars, lorries etc to go too fast and make a lot of noise when going downhill over speed bumps. This goes on all night; quite annoying.

The latest flyer says nothing about it being a trial. As i understand it the previous attempt was described as a "trial" because the road traffic regulations allow doing road changes as trials without needing to do a proper consultation. It seems like this latest attempt is going to be described as a consultation and the change if it goes ahead would be permanent.

There's no notices about this Hewit no right turn up on any of the lamp posts around there that i can find, would someone who has the leaflet post a scan or photo of it here so we can all see it?

I've attached a copy, will try to embed it later.

Thanks Alison.

So from that this is how it says to comment:

This letter marks the start of a three week period during which we welcome hearing your views and comments on this proposal. Please email your views to us at frontline.consultation@haringey.gov.uk (with 'no right turn' in the title line) by the closing date of 08 November 2013.

If no major objections are received, we plan to implement the 'no right turn' ban...for January 2014.

I imagine there'll be a lot of discussion about this at the Pemberton road play street session on sunday. Good opportunity to rally support for opposing this. I think the sums done above are reasonable and it's clear what impact this no right turn is likely to have.

I suppose that drivers heading south along Wightman Road turn into Hewit Road as their last chance to reach St Ann's Road without having to turn left on Green Lanes.  North bound Wightman Road drivers can do the same thing to avoid the dreadful congestion on Green Lanes between Endymion Road and the Salisbury although not all of these want St Ann's Road and intend to turn left onto Green Lanes.

Much depends upon the time of day but predicting the effect of banning right turns at the bottom of Hewit Road rests on knowing how much of the present traffic goes where.  It would be interesting to know whether any data has been collected about this.  It seems pretty obvious that Beresford and Fairfax will get some of the displaced vehicles.

I would not be surprised if the volume of traffic on Beresford is reduced in the morning rush but remains much the same in the evening rush. Eliminating the St Ann's traffic from Hewit will make it much more useful for drivers who use it to turn left.
