Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last week we had a letter through our door from Thames Water saying that they were checking some properties in the area because of pollution in the water supply (caused by people routing toilet water via the normal drains, yuck).

They came round today - the good news is that the above isn't a problem for us, but the bad news is that when they checked under the manhole cover in our front garden they found standing water there that apparently means the exit pipe is blocked and needs to be cleared.

Has anyone had anything similar to this? Any recommendations as to who could sort it out? From a quick look on the Thames Water site they offer a £100 service but no idea if that is the going rate.

... .'they found standing water there that apparently means the exit pipe is locked and needs to be cleared'... .. Do you mean BLOCKED ? if so, a regular plummer can fix this. I think rates start at around £80. There's pleanty of plummer reccomendations here on HoL.

Oops, yes. Have amended. Thanks James and Justin.

we had a similar problem, and got some rods and did it ourselves. Well, him indoors did..

I had this problem a few years ago Alison. It was nappy wipes and the liners from our cloth nappies that got flushed done the bog.  Once one get caught in the very small drain at the end of the large chamber that should be under your man hole cover another catches, and another and so on until you need dynarod.

You could get some rods and have a crack yourself, but you might not fancy it. It is likely to be nappy stuff or fat (cooking fat- see this beauty! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23584833). Maybe give that a go first if you are up for it.

I have a leak in the basement from the source pipe on the street outside my property to within the property and Thames water have offered to pay for it all. seems like a new venture to tackle leaks. Hope this helps
