It seems to me that every time I log on to HoL these days there are loads of ads from people selling stuff, as though it were Gumtree. I've used the site myself to give away some old furniture, so clearly there is a need for this kind of local facility, but I wonder if it might be better on a separate page as it seems to be taking over from discussion and debate as the main reason for using the site.

We don't have the IT systems to cope. Neither did the government it turns out.
Yes it sucks but people complained about the amount of politics being discussed in 2010 too (I hope they're happy now).
Yes, John's right. I lost count of the number of conversations that started 'It's a great site *but* I don't like the politics/moaning/crime and grime etc'. Hugh and I often did several posts about flowers, food and general loveliness a week but those didn't seem to be the ones that people 'saw'.
Having said that, it's true there are a lot more posts around transactions which is not something I would want to discourage as clearly it's working for people and making the site valuable for them. Aside from certain house rules, people can post the content that matters to them and we don't try and control that overly.
As a matter of interest, what content does make the site more interesting, do you think?
Is it possible to block (or just not read) the pages you don't like? I'm sure a lot of people find them useful.
For sale: Filter software that blocks ads £9.99
Nice.
If you enter the site via the forum categories, its possible to avoid the 'small ads'
I only read from the "front page", as have never quite worked out which category things fit into. I suppose it feels as though interesting discussions (sorry I know I'm being subjective) get very quickly pushed out of view, as there is so much new content all the time.
I've just read about the late economist Ronald Coase who - according to the Guardian obituary thought that if our neighbours play music too loudly we should negotiate with them to decide whether we should pay them to stop, or they should pay us to be allowed to continue.
Obviously, if people object to the use of HoL for selling stuff, they should offer to pay the sellers to remove their ads, or the sellers should pay all HoL members a small percentage for having to read these ads.

P.S. Fee schedule for removing one of my posts from Hol available on request.
I really like looking at what's for sale. Im always on the hunt for a bargain, especially if I can pick it up withing a 1 mile radius.
I do think that it warrents it's own page though. That way other discussions are not lost in 'baby pram for sale' ads.
In answer to Liz's question regarding content, I quite like a bit of constructive talk of politics. I also like to know what is going on to better the community.
