Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi There,

I am all up for keeping independant businesses going (especially pubs) but I've noticed as of today the West Green Pub on West Green Road has been boarded up and shut down.

This is great news for the area as the pub was a complete dive and attracted some very dodgy characters, also drugs being used/sold openly in the street, people urinating on the pavement.

Does anyone know if there are plans for it or is it going to be a metal clad beast for us to enjoy forever ?

Really hope this is the start of a huge tidy up of West Green Road. Its in a disgusting state and has been neglected for decades. Shame on the local councillors for letting it get this bad.

Roll on regeneration !!! Still yet to see anything valid in the area.

Yup the boards have come of the WG pub.

Costa opening is a double edged sword.
1) It has improved the way that corner looks and will throw down a challenge to other businesses "up their ante" in order to compete. I'll show less adveturous potential investors that teh place has potential.
2) it will start to drive leases higher and make it more difficult for small independent businesses to survive. We may end up with clone town gentrificationi and lose those green grocers that sell stuff to the ocal community.

Haringey Council has already done stuff and has plans for WG Rd improvements...

as Billy Hole knows and I beleieve has participated in.

They have also earmaked an amount of money for improving shop fronts generally in Tottenham.

It is a pity though that these sums to be allocated to local independent businesses are dwarfed by the huge sums being allocated to private companies such as TH Spurs and developers hoping to demolish and rebuild in our conservation areas along Tottenham's Historic Corridor.
The Council has sort of lost the plot and has performed extremely poorly for many years to the disservice of local people. Of late the regime of elected politicians has hatched a scheme that they are calling regeneration but it is mostly going to replace the "problem PEOPLE" with new gentrifiers.

It is not the "gentrification" per se that poses a problem for me. It is the process by which it is taking place = to the exclusion of a lot of the local businesses. Many can be spruced up if the council was really interested in helping people to improve their businesses. But it is easier to just allow the displacement to take place.

I do agree that we need to get rid of anti social behavioiur. But those people may also live in the area. Do you think they do that where they come from (Poland)? I don't think so and that's because the society doesn't allow it. People pee in the street in central London and in Angel all the time. If Angel hasn't been gentrified tell me!  I do not like it either. But I doi want my local green grocers to stay so I can buy the pumpkins and real avocados. I want Tottenham Wies to stay so I can stock up on a full range of alcohol and other stuff I cannot get in Sainisbury's. The process needs more managing. The place has been neglected by the Council. It is only recently that they are making an effort. Local businesses have been allowed to keep their premises looking like sh... The conservation area guidelines aare flaunted openly. Look at the planning application for 261 high Rd

click on "Proposed shop front details" and look at what has actually appeared as a shop front. IN A CONSERVATION AREA!!!! Nothing is wrong with the shops themselves as they are used by local residents and seem very popular. I certainly don't haev problems with them as their are loads of empty units on the High Rd to receive nice cafes and other shops, etc.

The problems are endemic in Haringey Council. Lets hope that they change.
