Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today's planning applications list shows an application for the use of this triple shop premises as A3 (Restaurant). So it seems that what the owner told me a few weeks back may not have been the whole truth.

I'm told that the application is being submitted by an operator who is already running a restaurant elsewhere in North London.  The plans are for it to be another Turkish / Kurdish operation.

The traders I've spoken to seem split on whether another Turkish restaurant is a good thing or a bad thing.

I was in fairline only yesterday and asked the guys what was happening and they said they definitely weren't closing just doing a refurb.

Same as they said to me. You can't really blame them, I suppose. They want the sale to go through. Here's the full planning application. You can support or object via this page.

funny how they claim the change of use will require 'superficial' changes to the front - surely they will gut it and reframe the whole frontage completely?

It's odd that there's no specific debate (or is there?) about the pollution effect of a concentration of grill-type restaurants with the terrain & prevailing wind as it is. There is a smog-like fug on our road when they fire up the ovens in the early evening.

I certainly wouldn't be welcoming it if I lived in any of the nine or so flats above the three shops.

No, you cannot blame them. But would this make it a triple fronted establishment?

Yes, it's planned as the first triple Turkish on Green Lanes.

It made me think of the naval arms race at the beginning of the 20th century- a Dreadnought of a kebab shop!

It was interesting talking to a couple of influential members of the traders group yesterday, both of whom were Turkish. One thought enough was enough, that we're already at saturation point with Turkish restaurants and this application ought to be challenged. Another likened the high street to Oxford Street and said "The more the better, then more peope will ome here from outside".

You pays yer money...........

There are queues in the restaurants we already have. Yes, these guys are putting their money on the line and I suspect they're right, there is more demand for cheap Turkish food than is currently being satisfied on our high street.

When I first dined at Selale I thought it was way too big and would go under, but they have a queue sometimes at the weekend!

Selale is heaving, esp with that outdoor space and the sliding doors that open up the rest of the restaurant. Smart design. But it's quieter in the winter.

Thing is Turkish food pretty much covers Mediterranean food so a Spanish, Italian, Greek or middle-eastern concern is not going to bring anything particularly different to the area. Gourmet burger joint anyone?

How would GBK get a lease? They pay their staff minimum wage and spend a lot on the kitting out of their restaurants so even if they could get a lease, I don't think they'd survive. Lamb in yoghurt over a burger any day.

"this application ought to be challenged" Good luck with that, we can't even stop a betting shop. Yes, there are too many Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes. The next person who starts nimbying around about "the wonderful multicultural place that is Green Lanes" will get a slap with a kebab. It's Turkish.

Personally I'll never touch a baklava or a kebab for as long as i live, had complete overkill when i lived on the Ladder. And the smell! You can't get away from it! Adding another restaurant is completely stupid. But it's their money. They won't get a penny of mine!
