Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Beware the badass Japanese knotweed ..
There have been various posts about Japanese Knotweed over the years but there is a piece in the Standard today by David Sexton about this scary weed and how near some is to his garden in Harringay.
From the article it clearly isn't only found in Harringay, although David doesn't mention the unique hybrid that has been formally identified up in Railway Fields, an unholy cross between Russian Vine and Japanese Knotweed. But it certainly seems to be a growing problem - in particular I've been very struck by the number of gardens on St Anns Road I see with it, and there is an amazing front garden on the corner of Cavendish and Wightman Rd which was paved over in an attempt to get rid of it - now the plants are just pushing up around the paving.

For anyone curious as to how to recognise Knotweed, it's worth a trip up to Myddelton House near Enfield, as they have got a small area where they grow it so that everyone can see what it looks like. (it's just behind the terrace by the pond) We went in early spring, then again 6 weeks later, and in that time it grew from a few inches high to about 8 feet and an inch thick.
It's worth a trip to the gardens anyway as they're lovely (and free!), but particularly so to arm yourself with the knowledge of how to identify it

The Japanese Knotweed fear industry at work again... I feel sorry for anyone having to spend £3k getting rid of the stuff. I eliminated it from a garden in one year using a systemic weedkiller bought from a garden centre.

I spotted a big patch on the Frome Road (Westbury Avenue) embankment on Tuesday (2nd). I took this pic and reported it to the council here: https://twitter.com/ktkinnear/status/352151066214813696
Not sure what the council will do, it's been passed to 'Frontline' so I will be interested to see what, if anything, they do. It's near the Mannock Rd allotments if anyone is interested.

Sorry to hear that Jacqueline. Sounds like a classic example of the (probably very profitable) fear industry that has developed around these plants. The specialists obviously want mortgage companies to make these sort of decisions because it's good for business. Mortgage companies now have this fear because of ridiculous claims made by people with a vested interest that this plant can knock your house down, or is impossible to eradicate, or other nonsense. Hope it doesn't scupper your house buying plans!

Interestingly the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors says that knotweed is 'treatable and rarely causes severe damage to property'.

Please please someone tell me how to get rid of it?
I have been cutting and digging it up for three years and it does nothing. It doesnt help that the council house behind me has 8 feet tall plants and the people don't seem to care, (they cut their grass once a year)...
I tried talking to the council about doing something to the house behind me as I thought that might help...but they were rude and offered zero help.
I also asked a private gardener and he said he would charge quite a lot to get rid of it but he couldnt guarantee it would work...(ummm...why would I pay for that then?!?)
