We recently used Enterprise, in Palmers Green, on Green Lanes just the other side of the North Circular. They came to pick us up an hour before the car rental was booked for, which was really handy. Nice staff, car OK, not particularly cheap, but none of them are!

Zipcar is a car club scheme, works really well if you can plan ahead a bit, cars all over the place, good value for shorter trips around London. There is a sign-up cost and a bit of a wait before you get your card, but I highly recommend it.

I second Jono for Zipcar.  We never miss having a car since it was stolen!

If you want to properly rent a car from a rental company, we do not recommend to rent from a central London (e.g. Kings Cross) as the prices are much steeper than, say, in places like Enfield or Palmers Green.

Sixt in Walthamstow, if by locally you mean Tottenham, was good the last time I used it.

Just investigate independent insurance companies so you don't have to pay "excess insurance" that costs as much as the whole hiring.
