This in from the Ladder's 'Safety Partnership'
It has now been clarified that Haringey Council policy is that emptied bins should be left ‘an arm’s length from the gate’.
This does create some security problems as bins left just by the gate all day long may well be an indication that the resident is not in, particularly if they go on to be left for more than one day.
The LCSP therefore asks that all our members should pass on this information to friends and neighbours, and perhaps set up a friendly mutual help scheme to replace bins whenever they are left blocking a gate/pathway.
From LCSP minutes, but ignore it. It's now superseded by Haringey Environment Supremo, Nilgun Canver's intervention - see above.
Done but do feel free to add a post any time.......
Back to my gripe about inefficiencies. The roadsweeper has just been sweeping our pavements, yet in a few hours our bins, garden and food waste will be emptied and it will be all messy again. Surely even Veolia cannot think that this makes sense....
<deep sigh> Of course it makes no sense.
I phoned one of the senior staff in Haringey's Environment Department who was very helpful and will get this looked into. Still Lausanne Road?
But, Charlotte, if in the future, this happens again, please do email or phone the Veolia Call Centre. Add your full name and address to a quick cut-and-paste from your posting on HoL. And consider copying-in your councillors.
If I'm in a rush I just copy the address of the discussion thread (or right-click the permalink for a particular posting) and ask them to read that.
Thanks Alan, that is very kind of you and yes it was on my to-do list to email Veolia, but last time I did they said they would investigate and get back to me but they never did.
Still Lausanne Road.
Charlotte
Charlotte, this afternoon I got a disappointing reply from Haringey Environment Department about the need to plan street sweeping for after the bins are collected.
I was also disappointed to see street cleaning staff described as "operatives" sixteen years after the National Single Status agreement should have made the term as obsolete as Roman sponge sticks.

Dear Cllr Stanton,
Your enquiry about Road sweeping schedules – Lausanne Road - LBH/1947213
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the above issue which has been passed to me for reply. I can confirm Lausanne Road is scheduled to be swept twice per week on a Wednesday and Saturday. We have endeavoured to where possible realigning services in a number of roads in the borough where street sweeping is undertaken after waste collection services, where services can be carried out efficiently. Unfortunately the demand for street sweeping on the day of waste collections will always exceed our capacity, so there are some roads within the borough such as Lausanne Road where this co-ordination is not possible.
In order for those roads where services have not been realigned to not suffer with litter fall made by spillages from waste collection services, all operative are instructed to ensure any spillages made whilst undertaking collection are immediately cleared.
As a result of concerns raised arrangements have been made for Lausanne Road N8 to be monitored to ensure the waste collection crews are fulfilling this requirement.
Single Frontline | Place and Sustainability Directorate
Hi Alan, thank you very much for the follow up on this and posting the reply above. It is good that we get the road swept twice a week, sad to see that it cannot be coordinated better. I will keep an eye on whether the binmen clean any spillages.
