Fun campaign stunt in Muswell Hill - help Oxfam and meet Lynne Featherstone MP!
Dear Hornsey and Wood Green Constituents,
Oxfam wants to draw attention to the shocking problem of land grabs - this is where companies or foreign governments buy up land in developing countries without any consultation and the local people live and farm the land get unfairly and sometimes violently evicted.
At the G8 Nick Clegg is leading on the land discussions so we have a very real opportunity to get something done about this unethical practice.

We are organising a land grab auction stunt where a group of activists stages a land auction in Muswell Hill. Lynne Featherstone MP will be there to talk about the issue - don't miss your opportunity to talk to her - and to get a few pictures!
Campaign stunts are always fun - it's an opportunity to do something unusual and to act for a good cause + to meet other people interested in poverty issues and international development. Come along and see what it's like, you might love it!
The event will take place on June 7th at 6.45pm outside Barclays, on the corner between Muswell Hill Broadway and Queen's Avenue - see the picture attached.

It needs repeatedly pointing out that Lynne Featherstone's Government is responsible for an immense amount of suffering going on right now in Haringey, with thousands facing the threat of eviction because of the bedroom tax, benefit cap, arbitrary benefit sanctions and loss of council tax exemption. Local food banks are collapsing under the avalanche of need caused directly by central government policies. I actually think that Oxfam should NOT be working with Featherstone at a time like this - in any case her interest in the issue is not sincere but prompted by her desire to gain positive publicity to hang on to her seat, and so her involvement serves to discredit Oxfam as well as insulting people made destitute by her government.

I'm the Oxfam Activism Coordinator and so am replying on behalf of the central team. I wanted to reply to let you know a bit more about why we are holding the action in Lynne Featherstone's constituency and why it's crucial that she is involved.
On 17th and 18th June world leaders will be coming together to discuss global issues and make important decisions that will change the lives for better or worse of people everywhere. Oxfam has been campaigning for the last couple of years on land grabs. This is the practice of corporations buying up thousands of acres of land and evicting the people that rely on their land for their homes and livelihoods. It is leaving thousands of people without food or a home. Our aim has been to ensure that land grabs get on to the agenda for discussion at the G8. There is a real opportunity for real change IF politicians agree to a transparency agreement so underhand acquisition of land can not continue. To do this we have to influence the politicians that hold this power. It is crucial that we engage Lynne Featherstone on these issues as she is a Minister for International Development and an influential Lib Dem MP. She will feedback the concerns raised by her constituents (that's why we need them there!) and Oxfam supporters through the stunt to Nick Clegg in time for the G8 talks.

You might also be interested to know that Oxfam shares your concerns about food banks and widening inequality in the UK. Our UK Poverty Team are working on this issue and following a recent report that we commissioned on this issue which shows that 500,000 people are now reliant on food banks - we are calling for a parlimentary enquiry into food poverty. Incidentally I shall be reporting this to Oxfam centrally as it appears to be little more than a party political stunt for the Liberal Democrats. "We're especially keen to have Lynne's constituents with us", hem hem I wonder why...

Thank you for your comment, I understand your concerns. I can assure you that this is not a party political event – we want Oxfam supporters to engage with their MP and tell Lynne they care about global poverty and more specifically, about the land grabs issue – that is all. These meetings are taking place all across London and Britain, and various MPs are involved. All events we organise are based entirely on Oxfam GB general guidelines and apply to campaign events with all MPs. That a particular area happens to have an MP from a particular party is completely beyond our control.
This event is open to everybody. We encourage constituents to come because we want to show the MP that they care about the issue, especially before the G8 event which is so crucial for the IF campaign. We believe it is very important for MPs to know what their constituents think. This has been part of Oxfam’s activity for decades and has never had anything to do with supporting any particular party or individual. I can assure you that Oxfam GB managers will be proud of this event.
Oxfam’s events in the area have in fact involved a variety of politicians from all three parties (e.g. see our Poverty: Local and Global event with London Assembly members and the Hunger Banquet).

Lynne Featherstone - Boo! In addition to the above it was also her about turn on betting shops that got me. She didn't support the amendment to the localism bill that could have changed the classification of betting shops and given local councils more powers to stop them springing up every 100 yards despite proclaiming that enough is enough.
