Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We were burgled yesterday and I thought worth highlighting since it took place between 10.30 and 5, and they got in by removing a pane of glass from the front window (not smashing). No neighbours saw anything so I don't know if they had a cover story.

The police said the only way to lessen the impact of this is to really hide valuables (they recommended laptops and key documents hidden in a laundry basket or inside clothes). It seems a bit extreme, but I really wish I had put my things at the bottom of a laundry basket.

I am so sorry.  We got burgled last month so really feel for you - in fact we are still feeling for ourselves, but we have a little bit left over to share around.  If there is anything we can do, let me know we are around all weekend, even if you want to meet for a pint/coffee and scream/cry for half an hour, we are happy to join in/listen.

Take care.

Hi David,

I'm so sorry to hear that you were burgled. We suffered the same fate a little over a month ago, again none of our neighbours saw or heard a thing. I know that platitudes or truisms won't help right right now but I just hope they didn't take everything that's valuable to you.

Please everyone, keep your eyes and ears open. This is turning into a real epidemic and - God forbid - it could be you e-mailing this forum next time.

d.

Now the burglars know to look in the laundry basket.

Flippancy aside, this reminds us all to keep backups of backups, preferably in another house/workplace. The cost of a spare hard drive is peanuts compared to the grief of losing your archive.

Thank you for the warning and I am so sorry to hear you have had to experience this.

Really sorry for you people being burgled. Such a violation of your space as well as loss of your personal things, data etc. It's very brazen cutting out pane of glass in window but with so many places being refurbished I guess people don't notice or think to ask questions. Asking a neighbour to keep a look out in return for you doing that for them might help a bit in future. Not always possible but perhaps worth a try. If someone knows you are not having any work done, then they will be suspicious and perhaps report it.

Sorry to hear that David.  We got burgled last year, and it's stunningly unpleasant.

I definitely agree with the advice about back ups.  Other than jewelery that had sentimental value, the only thing I couldn't replace was photos on my laptop.  I lost about a years worth of family pictures, (which were ironically on there waiting for me to put onto a back up hard drive).  Now I use an online one that backs up automatically, which gives me a bit of peace of mind.

Sorry to hear that you were burgled. If you're interested in an alarm this might be worth checking out http://www.cherrysecurity.webeden.co.uk/#/alarm-offers/4572109463
