Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Fun campaign stunt in Muswell Hill - help Oxfam and meet Lynne Featherstone MP :)
Dear Haringey residents!
Oxfam wants to draw attention to the shocking problem of land grabs - this is where companies or foreign governments buy up land in developing countries without any consultation and the local people live and farm the land get unfairly and sometimes violently evicted.
At the G8 Nick Clegg is leading on the land discussions so we have a very real opportunity to get something done about this unethical practice.

We are organising a land grab auction stunt where a group of activists stages a land auction in Muswell Hill. Lynne Featherstone MP will be there to talk about the issue - don't miss your opportunity to talk to her - and to get a few pictures!
Campaign stunts are always fun - it's an opportunity to do something unusual and to act for a good cause + to meet other people interested in poverty issues and international development. Come along and see what it's like, you might love it!
The event will take place on June 7th at 6.45pm outside Barclays, on the corner between Muswell Hill Broadway and Queen's Avenue - see the picture attached.

We are organising a land grab auction stunt where a group of activists stages an auction to sell off the Alexandra Palace (sounds crazy, I know, but it's going to happen)
Unfortunately, the local council attempted exactly this, five years ago, in connection with Alexandra Palace. Our Trustees (Haringey) selected former slum-landlord Firoz Kassam, whose company Firoka (Alexandra Palace) Ltd. bid £1.5m for the building. I know it sounds crazy, but it happened!

Following the huge High Court victory five years ago over the Charity Commission (and the Trustees), the news slowly got better, culminating in last week's award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to begin the long process of restoring the east side, that eventually, should see the whole building rejuvenated.

I hope it goes well BUT it does need to be pointed out that as a member of this Government Lynne Featherstone is emphatically not on the same side as those who want to reduce or eradicate poverty. I hope someone will take the opportunity to confront her about the many thousands of local people whose benefits have been arbitrarily cut and have been left destitute, in addition to those forced into losing their homes by policies explicitly designed to make people suffer as much as possible - not to mention the cuts in international aid, etc. I know she will claim that it's not her responsibility and she's doing what she can, etc, but it needs to be directly pointed out to her that local people fully are aware that the only reasons she gets involved in things like this are to save her conscience and to hang onto her seat. Apologies for hijacking a thread dedicated to promoting a very laudable stunt but I think these things are crying out to be said.

Please note that the location of the stunt has changed! It's not in Alexandra Palace, but in Muswell Hill :)
