Preparations Begin for High Street Improvement Project on Green Lanes

Following the discussions on HoL last year, and again recently, we're finally seeing evidence of the improvement works on Green Lanes gradually begin.
Yesterday, I came across a bunch of guys with some equipment that looked like it was more than just a speed camera. Apparently they're scanning the shop fronts of those shops that will get the heritage treatment as part of the improvement works.
On completion, the scans will be rendered as 3D files and will be used to help the architects and designers with the design and development of the new shop fronts.
Although funds for this element of the project are necessarily limited, all shopkeepers on the Harringay stretch of Green Lanes were invited to apply. Those who applied and were successful will contribute 20% of the costs themselves.
I learned yesterday that amongst those who've been successful are both Erbiler and Ekas jewellers and Cheriee hair salon.
As the weeks go by through Spring we're likely to see more and more signs of the works beginning.

its not just the shop fronts.
if they don't take down the awful satellite dishes and estate agents boards, there's no point doing shop fronts!

I agree. There are satellite dishes, an increasing number of, what are I suspect unauthorised shop signs, as well as illegal estate agent signs. I hope the Council and the traders between them will work to sort this out.

Don't forget that company opposite the Arena park that sells the dishes. I forget their name despite it being emblazoned on all 20-odd of them!

They've moved to the middle of Grand Parade. No satellite dishes yet but I did notice the other day that they've added a big sign to the building.

I have to say that I am pretty upset that Haringey Council can find money to improve the shop fronts in green lanes yet they have pulled any money on the decent homes project and have left tenants like myself who live on Green Lanes, with broken and ancient kitchens and bathrooms and 80 year old electrics, just saying

Jude it was Boris who found the money (£40,000?) to improve the shop fronts in Green Lanes, not Haringey Council. However, you might be pretty upset that the council has found £90,000 p.a. (plus all the overheads) for a new PR position at their Communications and Propaganda Department.

Great news, Rob. Is there a plan to keep things in check in the longer term? Anything on the accumulation of shop signs attached to walls that seem to be growing in number every year? It's not clear that they're currently regulated - or maybe you know better?

That makes sense. I agree that some ought to be kept. It would be ideal if the traders org / the Council and residents could agree guidelines that respected the businesses' need to do business but also took account of the development of an aesthetically acceptable high street. If those guidelines were acceptable to the traders as a whole, I wonder if they then might in the first instance be self-enforced by the traders as a group?
