Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have again asked for some enforcement action by the council against HGVs using Wightman Road and the ladder roads.

I am pleased to say that I have just had an email from the Parking Infrastructure Manager to say that they will be carrying out some enforcement this week between 7am and 8.30am.

Lets hope it starts to send a message to the companies that they lorries belong to.

yes, the figures make interesting reading and your analysis is right.  I have been nagging the council to do some enforcement for Harringay ward so glad to see that its reaped some rewards!  I will continue to nag them but they also need to find a more sustainable solution.

A valid point Therese.  I have followed one from the Wightman Road depot to the one on Tottenham Lane.  He was doing over 30mph down Wightman (20mph limit) and had little regard for the speed humps.  That road already has enough of a speeding problem without coupling it with heavy vehicles.

Incidentally, there is a cost implication for the council here.  I have noticed that the speed humps on Cavendish now have gouges out of them in places, and the area about 2-3 feet after the humps is now starting to break up - soon to be yet another pot hole.  I'd happily put money on excessively heavy vehicles speeding up this degradation.

Same thing has happened on burgoyne - massive chunks carved out of the humps. Can't be long before a pothole causes someone's car a bit of damage. Perhaps we should all take some photos and post them here in a name and shame manner?

So I think most people know this, but the council confirmed to me that Jewsons are allowed to use any Ladder road to get to their site and any ladder road out, though they have agreed with them that Burgoyne is the preferable route out.  See email from council below.

Sorry for the incorrect info, I should have said this is the outward route that was agreed. To gain access to the site they could legally use any road except entering from Endymion Road as they are not permitted to cross the week bridge on Wightman Road

I hope this clarify the situation, once again apology's for the mistake.

I think this is a bigger issue than the 7.5 tonne weight limit. The ladder roads are clearly used as rat runs with the 20 mph and weight limits regularly flouted as they are not/have not been enforced.

There are plenty of examples of roads in this borough and the neighbouring ones where this can be stopped or reduced if the council are willing.  The above letter suggests that they are not.

Having moved to Warham Road last year I have to say I am quite depressed with the noise from the traffic accelerating up the hill from the lights.  When we looked at houses here it appeared to be a nice quiet area.

Most of the problems are actually caused by the speed bumps.  We unfortunately live between two so people accelerate from one to the other.

There must be someway we can mobilise this strength of feeling to bring some action to improve all of our lives??

here here.  It's the speed and flow and volume.  I find that it's long wheel base transits that make the most noise - loads bounding around in the back as they fly up the road.  A 7.5t limit doesn't impact them.

Agreed - the speed bumps cause real issues, but the council seem unwilling to do anything about them at all, presumeably because of the related expense.

We need a different way to curb speed that does n't involve cars & lorries bouncing up and down just metres away from our home.  

There are 1000's of people on the Ladder who are affected by this.  Maybe we should start a pressure group or even stand for council election as a single issue party ?  We should definitely start with an online petition...

Agreed.  I am continuing to work with the council on this but it does need the political will of the Labour adminstration to move this forward and I can tell you, its just not there.  One of our libdem pledges at the last election was to undertake a holistic traffic survey of the whole of the ladder to try and work out how to solve these issues, speeding, uneven traffic loads on some roads and the problem of HGVs.  Unfortunately the we were lumbered with this current adminstration until 2014.  I continue to listen and won't let this issue be filed in the "too hard to solve" category, which is what happens to lots of problems here.

How many people would be interested in meeting next week to start some sort of group?  

I have not run anything like this before but am willing to arrange an initial meeting if there is enough support and see where we go from there.

Maybe it would be worth starting a new thread on here.
