Burglars on the outlook !
Beware everybody !
I was dressing up in my front bedroom this morning, (9 o'clock) (the window slightly opened) when I heard a ladder being set against my house. Thinking that it was our window-cleaners, I was incensed that they should not have knocked at our door first and called my husband. He went to inquire but there was nothing at all in the street. All gone. So, there are people driving down the ladders road, discreetly observing and ready to pounce, well equipped, at the first opportunity. The whole thing did not take more than 3/4 mns.
They disappear only because they heard me calling my husband.
It is not the first time that we have observed old vans going down our street, like snails, and "taking" everything in. As for our bins, they are also attractive to some people. So beware everybody.

As I said, ease of entry is first priority for burglars. I'm guessing houses in 'leafy' areas are more likely to have alarms and tighter house security than those in less wealthy areas.
Also, was told by police that HMOs are popular because they are more likely to have less security, people are less careful about open windows and if a burglar gets in, they are in effect burgling several households at once (more stuff). I believe if an HMO is burgled, the police have to record each 'household' entered within the house and this puts burglary rates up for areas with lots of HMOs.

Just out of interest, this is my 'security system for my window. Sorry it's a bit blurred but you can see the garden trellis (before I finished staining it) and the chain which is screwed into the frame. I think the would-be burglar thought it was a door chain and was trying to find where it unhooked. (there's a loose bit of chain hanging down from the screwed in bit. Take no notice of that)

You can get very simple screws for sash windows which you fit so that the window can only open by whatever distance you choose. Remember windows are also an exit root in case of a fire.

Madeline - that is terrible ! so frightening. I am going to keep a look and and defo report anything suspicious to police as it seems from what people are saying there is really a lot of this sort of stuff going on.

Mine is not a sash window though, it's a pivot window plus I was only working with what I had to hand at the time. It's done the job on more than one occasion. If you look closely you'll see that the glass on the left isn't quite that. It's been boarded over. That's from another attempt when the would-be burglar tried to wrench the window open. It twisted the frame and the glass shattered but stayed in place. The noise was horrendous and the burglar ran off. I left the board in place as I never open the curtains there anyway.

Its great to have the warning and it makes sense to lock your doors and windows and maybe have an alarm, but please think how many homes there are. It is generally quite safe around here.
Re the descriptions I also don't understand why people get so hung up on that. I am Scandinavian and if someone is described as Scandinavian it is generally accepted to be tall, blond, fair and with blue eyes. Many don't look like that, including myself, so my look is not described as Scandinavian and see no discrimination in the term being used to describe someone who is truly Scandinavian or not.

I don't mean to prey on people's misfortune, and in the case of the ladder incident this would not help, but would highly recommend (obviously!) an alarm and door intercom system. CF

I agree you can't stop people looking through your windows - nosy parkers! but would then advise that, apart from the usual TV/DVR etc to NOT leave desirables e.g. laptops or handbags, visible through a window. It's too tempting and easy for them. I have an intercom which rings to a phone in kitchen and upstairs which I can answer and not have to open the front door to strangers. There is no doubt that a clean, labelled (not blank) bell box at the front of the house is a deterrent factor for the opportunists.
