Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There have been a growing number of sightings of the sparrowhawk (left) and kestrel (right) in Harringay                                                                                                                                                                                   Photos: BBC & RSPB

I've picked up on a local online conversation about a growing number of sightings of small birds of prey in Harringay.

Has anyone else seen a kestrel or sparrowhawk in the hood? Better still any Harringay birds of prey pictures?

Just seen a sparrow hawk in garden in Nelson Road. A welcome visitor if it would rid us of the pigeons that crowd out the smaller birds on our feeders.

Hi Hugh

A sparrowhawk was seen at Railway Fields a few weeks ago. One of us heard a great noise of other birds in panic, which which drew our attention. A group of crows saw him off. Beautiful pic, thank you.

We will be limiting tickets to 40 so don't leave it too long book!

I've also seen Kestrels in Alexandra Park and last year I thought I saw a Kestrel in Downhills Park but am not certain.

I thought there were some more in the Town Hall

Yes, over the years have certainly seen a kestrel occasionally patrol over the southern part of the Ladder. Nothing bigger than that so far, personally, though will now keep eyes open all the more.

This chap was casting his beady eye around my garden in Malvern Road this morning... The other birds were not happy, took a lot of banging of the window before he flew off...

Spotted! Is that a sparrow hawk Eugene? Saw a sparrow's nest this week - first time in many years. They're slowly making a comeback.

Looks like a sparrowhawk to me but I'm no expert. There was one small flock of sparrows around here for years but they disappeared last year. The relentless concreting of front gardens has removed much of the shrubbery they socialised in and the wood pigeons hoover up what food there is...

I've seen Kestrels in Alexandra palace grounds but never seen a Sparrow Hawk. How wonderful!
