The other day I noticed a fabric named 'Harringay' being sold on ebay. Intrigued, I wrote to the archive which holds the manufacturer's records to ask if they could tell me how it came by its name. They replied today with the following:
‘Harringay’ was produced in 1973 for the ‘Document Range’.
It was designed by Jean Kelsey from Edwardian tiles that were in a property in Harringay.
Intriguing! So can we track those tiles down?

It may be that the tiles are not so much in a property as outside a property. Eg, some (quite a few) ladder houses still have lovely original tiles in the porch area immediately outside the front door. I have noticed this before and am always on the lookout for bits of original Victorian design. I noticed the tiles again today walking up Allison Road - several houses on the right (going up the hill) still have original tiles outside. A suggestion for somewhere to start looking!
There aren't that many Edwardian houses/buildings in Harringay are there? Though that's not to say there isn't a Victorian house with Edwardian tiles.
You're right, but I'm assuming that it may have just been misapprehension on the part of Ms Kelsey.
I've been to the Warner Archive before. I think you have to book specially to see the archive though but it is a really interesting place if you like fabrics.
Yes, surely they were all built around in Edwardian era like my place. The paper looks a bit like the fireplace tiles that these houses are blessed with (or at least those that were spared from people taking them out and blocking the fireplaces.)
This is really beautiful. Everyone keep their eyes peeled! Where was Harringay then? I think it was before local gov reorganisation so if we could narrow down where it was we could then hunt the house!
Kamila - shock, horror! Harringay was where it still is and has been since the 1880s.
