Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There's a new restaurant/cafe/bar being fitted out opposite the Arena estate, next to the Polish shop. Apparently it's another Turkish place, with a garden out back.

Comparing our high street to others in London I'm sort of over the "another this", "another that"... we could have half the shops boarded up.

I guess I was wondering if it might be a Polish restaurant, given that it's next to the new Polish deli and hairdresser's. Better than "another" betting shop, anyway.

Although I don't particularly welcome more of the same or similar, its a good example why the approach taken by local authorities against betting shops super-saturation is likely to fail. Local authorities, who are not always populated by the sharpest knives in the drawer, believe that they need to seek anti "clustering" powers.

This is misguided and shows ignorance of the relevant Act (the last government's infamous Gambling Act), its powers and how its been and likely to be interpreted in the courts, where it counts.

What can be seen as undesirable clustering (for the FOBT premises) is seen as normal, healthy and desirable competition in all other services in the High Street, such as restaurants and jewellers.

We observe like-businesses clustering in many locations and most people regard it as a good thing: if you're interested in such and such go to so and so street for the best choice and best prices.

This basic obvious point won't escape the attention of the betting "industry" barristers if poorly-thought-through anti-clustering powers are ever tested in court.

The (unreformed) Gambling Act will easily trump any anti-clustering powers sought.

When my father went into business for himself selling used cars I just could not understand why he went for the plot between two existing dealerships. I got a pat on the head for that question rather than a long explanation.

Although imagine if our council did have the power to deal with "clustering". As I've said on here many times before local councils are under the influence of local businesses and they may use "anti clustering" laws to keep away competitors.

The problem with the betting shops is not clustering, it's the machines inside.

I'm happy to have more Turkish restaurants but it is weird to see the Salisbury absolutely heaving most nights because they have virtually NO competition. The Finsbury is nearly a mile away and the Garden Ladder is just not quite the same. When we had the Queen's Head, which is less than half a mile away, it was crap and it died. I think this is more complex than it seems and the last thing we need is planning meddling from local councils.

Shame it's not a Polish restaurant... Nice home made pirogi would have been good.

I don't mind a bit of Polish clustering to break up the big block of Turkish rest's and other businesses.

If you want Polish food, Autograf on West Green Road is worth a visit for ridiculously large portions of tasty Polish stodge at very reasonable prices.

Cheers! Passed by there a few times and did wonder what food was like.

I only like the veg dishes but if they are home cooked, delicious.

I'm no expert, but the pierogi taste good to me and seem very popular when we've been in. It's only a small place, so not really built for groups of more than four, but it's good, hearty, Eastern-European cooking at very reasonable prices. I know it's not Polish, but Pilsner Urquell is £3.10 a pint or something daft in there - bargain. Ideal place to pop in for comforting food during the Winter...or increasingly, the Summer!
