Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have again asked for some enforcement action by the council against HGVs using Wightman Road and the ladder roads.

I am pleased to say that I have just had an email from the Parking Infrastructure Manager to say that they will be carrying out some enforcement this week between 7am and 8.30am.

Lets hope it starts to send a message to the companies that they lorries belong to.

They're on the bottom of Warham, for instance so anyone going up via it has no excuse.

Jewsons frequently use Cavendish Road which has a sign, but quite frankly they don't care.  If they did, they wouldn't drive so fast up the road.

The reason they don't care is that they have been informed by the Council that the rules don't apply to them, based (as discussed elsewhere on this thread) on a bonkers reading of the relevant Ordinance. Unfortunately, as it is the Council who are doing the enforcing, unless they change their mind on this, nothing is likely to change.  Hopefully Karen can assist with this side of things, as us mere mortals have had little luck on this score!

Karen, thank you for pursuing this. Please can we have the signs back on Burgoyne? I live next to a speed bump and I don't care what Jewson's official line is, they and others come screaming down the hill (accelerating between speed bumps) and hit them at a whack that makes the house shake.

I live on Mattison Road. We get a lot HGV's coming up from Green lanes. Most of the HGV's are delivery trucks, who have delivered their foods to the Turkish shops on Green lanes, I think there needs to enforcement there as well. Maybe advising the shop owners about it.

Thanks for the info - its useful to help build a picture of the extent of the problem.  I'll have a word with the Green Lanes Traders Association rep and see if they can help to spread the word to their deliverers.

Is there any chance of asking about whether we need speed humps in the area, or whether they can be moved from time to time to reduce the burden on the houses which are right next to them?

Also it might be worth finding out whether these large lorries should be going down streets that have bridges over the canals. Just a thought - but the weight restrictions might be because of the bridges in the area.

Recently a few of the ladder roads were relaid and the speed humps took a couple of weeks to come back. I noticed on more than one occasion small cars doing truly frightening speeds. I'm talking 60mph plus.

The weight restrictions only came in with the one-way system. Before that HGVs and even moderately large vehicles could not use the ladder because if they encountered someone coming the other way they were stuck. Of course, there were a lot more cars parked on it during the day then too because there was no CPZ.

Fair point about people driving too quickly down the streets but if we are going to end up with lorries coming down the hills, surely we can spread the load (and the cracks in walls / ceilings) around?

I have sat down with pencil and paper and print-outs of the ladder trying to work out how it would be spread around "fairly" given the desire lines and surrounding traffic lighted intersections that we have and it's just impossible. The only way you could do it is to ruthlessly enforce the 7.5t access at both ends of Wightman Rd and that's just not going to be done although this is encouraging.

I appreciate that the speedhumps are a problem with regard to noise and vibration even for large vans but you're not going to get nirvana unless you move to the gardens.

The ones delivering to shops on Green Lanes are almost certainly under 7.5t. All of these vehicles, apart from the Jewson lorries, either enter or leave the Ladder using Wightman Rd. It is perfectly acceptable to concentrate the enforcement there. Personally I don't see why they can't treat them like parking tickets and just fine everyone and tell them to appeal if they think they're not guilty but maybe that's just me.

Yes John, you are probably right about the size of the delivery lorries but I am sure there are the odd one or two and its good to spread the word as wide as possible.

At your suggestion I have asked the council to carry out their enforcement earlier, say from 6am.  I haven't had a response yet but at least the request together with the reasoning has been made.
